So Which Great Lake is Missouri On?

I know this section is new and is always hard to break up the regions, but Missouri is not a Great Lake state. It needs to be in Mt-Plains section. Missouri's second largest city and Kansas' largest city share a border. The other big city, St.Louis, does not share a great population mix with Illinois. Kansas City people are more likely to get things going across state lines, or if their threads were in the same forum they might get more traffic and participation.

    Interesting notion, deanp.

Iowa is also does not touch one of the Great Lakes. I'd term Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri as part of the Upper Mississippi Valley, or something like that (see my sig).

Again, this is something that may be brought up with Joe Gardner with a PM. He's very open to ideas like this, especially given your case above.

For Iowa, they share population with Illinois in the QC (Quad Cities), but otherwise are kind of isolated with major populations in the state in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids/Falls, Iowa City, Ames, and Sioux City (though Sioux City is kind of connected with South Dakota?)

The Illinois folks are really concentrated near Chicago, which has quick access to Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, so it makes some sense for Illinois to be part of Great Lakes.

    Good discussion, though.

Oh yeah, as for traffic on the new sub-forums, we've been talking them up for our local folks, or else they may never have known they were created.

If you know other folks in your area, encourage them to join in to the Mountains/Plains discussion. Maybe make a sig like mine and start a roll call for the area. It's been a fun time learning new folks that are closer than I had thought. Plus, I've been lurking around and posting in Southern California because they have fun discussions over there.

I had noticed the Iowa inclusion also. And being a displaced Iowan I got a chuckle from that. Redrock and Rathburn are nice lakes, but they aren't Great.

Ha! Yeah, I'm with you. I'm a native of St. Louis (born in the city, but raised in North County).

My parents now live right on what folks in Missouri just refer to as "The Lake," meaning Lake of the Ozarks. Scenic, yes. In the same breath as Lake Michigan or Superior, no.

I happen to live in that forgottonia of Ill that has half of the population and a majority of the bike riders (outside of chicago) .We tend to line ourselves along ole miss with iowa and missouri. More of a rural vs. city thing. St. louis is more like chicago and their ideas go with that.So maybe a conversation between city and city, city and rural, would create a more profitable discussion.Possibly setting up rides of small groups from town to town camping hostel style or backyard camps. Local coffeehouses downstate are always looking for an excuse to entertain. A bike group with a little Rural interaction could actually create several exciting tours for a little cost(downstate is cheap).Winter is the perfect time to plan.Hope this rambling lament sparks something!

Great Slave Lake and Little Slave Lake are huge lakes as well! Shouldn'r the NW Territories be included in Great Lakes as well as Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec.....?

I think the Great Lakes region should be re-named the Big Ten Region it looks like it pretty much is the roll call for the Big Ten Universities, except for the 11th bastard member Penn State.

How about a new region titled "Midwest"?
