6/21 HAPPY FATHERS DAY!! 81 miles today at a very reasonable pace for a change. Not fast but not slow, just steady. Very light winds and partly cloudy, near perfect temp of about 75.

Hope others got a chance to enjoy similar weather where you live!!

Time now for a nap!

Good weather here too Leinad; started to get a bit warm and muggy later in the morning though, but overall pretty darn nice. Clicked off 61 miles. Good ride

27 miles of recovery riding after yesterday's Horribly Hilly and my legs felt like they were filled with concrete the whole time. Feeling pretty good now after I took a nap and a shower.

I raced with Mike Freidman from Garmin today.

Yes. The freaking guy who represented America on the track at the Beijing Olympics.

29 miles, with a bit of a detour due to a small pond overflowing onto the path. Enough with the rain!

Fort Cherry. It hurt.

Basically, Mike Friedman showed up. For the first few laps he kept a low profile, basically just being prom queen. He drifted back of me, and I was square in the middle. The first climb came around, and I start hammering up the left side and passed a gaggle of riders. The next thing I know, I see Friedman rocketing up the climb on my left. I'd never seen anyone climb that fast before.
The next thing I know, he's at the front, and everyone around me is in a smaller climbing gear and accelerate after him. The field is basically split in two. The rest is blurry, but I remember the descent, and there is a 10 ft gap between me and the back of the front group. I try as hard as I can, pull back for the next guy to follow through, then the next, then the next, etc. and we're losing ground. By the time I get to the front, I hammer as hard as I can, blow my group up, and gain some more distance. By the time I'm near close enough, I'm tired, solo, and we're climbing again. I look behind me, see a dozen other riders and scream obscenties until I'm in a silent rage.

After beating the side of my head, hoping for it to hurt enough so that I fall, I realize that I've broken my helmet. I ride the rest of the "race" with 4 others. Two from Cat Racing and two from Steel City. The next thing you know, it's just me and one Cat Racing guy, we talk and ride for 3 laps, until he says "well, Mitch. I'm pulling off." Not wanting to ride the last 16 miles alone, I rull off too, and suffer my way up the finishing hill to get to my car.

I did find one gem in the race pictures from one of the photographers, though. The look of pure WTF is all there:

WTF is correct, I wasted 2 hours of hard riding in an instant. It looks as if I"m riding right off the road! I'm hoping the image is of me turning onto the final straight leading to the finish. That last 1/2 mile hill leading into the finish killed me. I rode well within the Master's 45 + race until we turned onto the last hill leading into the finish. I tried to stay in the top 5 but couldn't match the pace in my big ring, when I switched to the little ring I couldn't get into a bigger gear fast enough and got gapped by everyone right then. I finished up the race following what was left of the field. A wonderful day and beautiful place to suffer. I can't complain too much, that race is not a good race for a 56 yr old, 5' 11", 186 lb'er.

Quick 21 this evening after dinner.,...a few minutes too soon after dinner, but needed to get out for a bit even though the heat/humidity was still awful.

21 miles. This was my first ride in "hot" weather (which i don't like) and it wasn't bad. I was actually slightly faster on average, but probably due to me going around the usual MUP mobs instead of alerting them and passing nicely. There were several other bikers out there today. I got passed by a guy on his aero bars but since I wasn't completely left in the dust, I felt good.

24 x 2.1 mile laps. Hot and fast, just what we all dreamed for in March.

It's funny. Just last year, it was practically law that a breakaway never stayed away in a Westlake Crit. Everyone was too amped. Now there's a break every week that puts like 2 minutes on the field.

And somehow, I find my way into that break every time.
