Not like I can do that on a trainer either, I guess. I tipped over the last time I did that.
So how are you affiliated with Roll?

I've got to try one.... some time. Maybe next winter. Do you think they are better than trainers?
I'm one of the roll bloggers, mine's more "me", just blips & observations & experiences, all about the joys of cycling. https://rollbikes.blogspot.com is from one of their employees and mentions reviews & sales, as well as some adventures. I think he's more mountain bike oriented personally too! Then there's https://rollforwomen.blogspot.com/ which is pretty self-explanatory. Finally is teamroll, which is less of a blog and more of hub for team members (like me, whee!).
WOOT!

Cool, it sounds like the cycling hub of Columbus.
I think the rollers give a better road feel than a trainer. They also help balance. Not to mentiont that they're cheaper than a comparable trainer.
Mine are some 10-15 y/o Nashbars that my coach got for $20 when Nashbar closed down an outlet store in Y-Town. He bought 10 sets and gives them to us as loaners.

Yeah, roll has this egalitarian, no ego/elitism, pure love of cycling thing that I love. Got my bike there, so they are also my official "LBS" for any tunes/cleans/repairs I can't do myself. Love those guys. Add in what Adam is doing at https://stanridgespeed.blogspot.com/ and oh man, good group to be part of!!!
Definitely going to find some rollers then for next winter. Hate the trainer.

I've had a long day today, with f-up after f-up at the restaurant, followed by a heavy dose of coquettry, followed by self-loathing, followed by the anxiety of my forthcoming trip..... well, I needed to unwind.
Basically, I hit the rollers in the basement at 12:45, and finished up at 1:45 in the morning when the rubber band for the drums broke.
I'm feelign a lot better, though I didn't get to my song on the playlist I had. Well, tomorrow I've got a very odd engagement, and off to find a new band for the rollers.

I was riding outside, into some pretty chilly temps (IIRC 10F was the lowest so far), but after that 100 miler, and coming home completely frozen and bonked, I'm sticking to the indoors. I need to show my track bike some love before I leave in two weeks.

A traveled a 24 mile out-n-back route from my home to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Most of the route was along the lakefront.
Sunny weather in the twenties made for great riding. Being out-of-shape made this short ride a challenge.

I can't sit in this house much longer. Even the rats and roaches are tip-toeing past me.
I am riding tomorrow. It is suppose to be in the 30's. Imagine that, happy to see 30 degree weather!

I have been reading the forums hoping to get enough ump to go and ride outside. I hate to be the only folk on the road getting weather whipped. Not to mention dodging ice and water on Bontrager race tires makes for an exciting, if not "are you outta ya mind?" trip. I rode a couple of days ago. I tried a new way of staying warm by using a rain coat; seeing that it keeps air and water out. The problem is it creates a greenhouse and after a while one gets too warm and sweat is kept near your body. Lord forbid if you stop and the sweat gets to cool down. I need an idea that will keep my head and ears warm and still let me wear a helmet. I tried the lycra stuff which keeps the head sort of warm, but my ears take a beating. And trying to put earmuffs on with a helmet, finding a skull cap that will fit over a helmet is fruitless. Any ideas? Wondering if one used a skin diving cap or one like the ice skating racers would do.

For the rest of your body you need to have base layers under a good cycling jacket that will allow moisture to wick off while blocking wind and keeping warmth in. You will also need some cold weather tights and shoe covers. Check out the commuting forum for additional advice. When you are dressed properly for the temperatures of the day the ride will not be uncomfortable at all. It can be just as bad to be overdressed as underdressed.

I think this is what you need to keep your head and ears warm. https://www.steepplanet.com/proddetai...laclava&cat=32

I had planned to go over to this scuba diving school to ask them about a head cover, but I was worried it might be a material that would not be suitable for cycling. I looked the spot up you suggested and the head cover "balaclava" wow!, was pictured. I am going to first try out ebay, and then if it is not on there--spelled cheaper--then I will order it from the spot you sent. Thanks. Also, I have tried the loose and layered approach. Even using cycling jackets and all. As an ex flyer in the USAf, we are trained to dress for weather in situations where one might get shot out of the sky. Cycling is different as it employs working up a sweat and at the same time trying to stay warm and cool; seemingly a contradiction of actions.
I also saw some shoe covers over at Eddy's. But they were more expensive than my cycling shoes. I guess I will have to go on Ebay for them too. At Home Depot they have hand or foot warmer packs that are chemical in nature. I am going to try them too.
The raincoat experiment was just an idea to see if a raincoat could eliminate a few layers because of its solid waterproof design. I am tryiing to avoid looking like the Michelin man cycling.
Cycling anyway in a few minutes!

-Get the shoe covers. The hand/foot warmers help, but they're not warm enough. I'm very used to cold weather and my gloves come off at 40 degrees, but riding with just those warmers isn't something I'd do.
-Finding a thermal cycling jacket is recommended. Mine is a Nalini that I found for pretty cheap ($100). It fits like a glove, looks great, can be worn in style off the bike, and even on 10 degree days, I wear a mesh CoolMax base layer to keep from overheating.
Hope it helps!

stumpsbmwm3,
I see you are in Cleveland. You could visit any of the local bike stores and get fixed up real well. Performance bike will most likely have the least expensive but the least options. Spin, Eddy's, Century Cycles and Bike Authority all have competent staff to help out.

Spin is Garysol and company. I want to go out there if nothing else but to see him. He is really a cool guy.
I have been frequenting Performance and since Eddy's has a 6.5 Trek Madone, I have built an altar there.
The reason I have been trying to get stuff a little cheaper is because I want that 6.5. Why, who knows, but that bike has been calling me every since I saw it. I have it as my screen saver on both my computer and cell.
I have bid on Ebay for the Bacl..... and am waiting until an auction gets closer for the covers and a better jacket.

-Find something like a thermafleece balaclava, Pearl Izumi has NICE stuff. When it comes to warmth, you gotta spend some cash.

Hey Crim and Tsuru,
I recently purchased a trainer, after reading how well Garysol and all were doing on theirs over the seasons. Well,...I set it up in the basement and was pedaling. Very boring. One could iron on me! Anyway, I tried using a video after a few days because my spiders in the basement were yawning and even furnace turned its nose up at me.
I was rolling pretty well and got lost in thought somewhere and the video folk banked into a turn. I tried to too. After much laughter from family and friends when I hit the basement floor, I decided the trainer had to go. My neighbor wanted it for his wife.
I went over to Performance and they had a roller set, set up in the back. I had my bike with me and brought it to try it out. After placing my arm on the shoulder of one of the staff like one would going home after a good drunken spell, I kinda got the hang of it. But....somehow my mind wander when this lady came in wearing some very revealing cycling gear. Needless to say I got real close with one of the walls. I think I might get one as I have seen them online. If you turn on the six o'clock news and see me pertruding out of a wall and firemen are working to remove me...you know what happened!

rollers are harder. You can't really zone out on them, but the resistence is much better.
Another donside; you have to have a lot of hours on them before you can start riding without hands and it is almost impossible to stand up and pedal.
By the way, what trainer did you have? You have to really try to fall over on one. I fell over once and that was during a pretty hard sprint and it was a cheapo trainer.

I just got off the rollers, an hour and a half of high cadence. I switched out to the 49x17 on the track bike and spun at 120-150rpm and listened to Suicide Silence.
