Did you ride today?

Yesterday was the craziest wind I've ever ridden in. We did a 57 miler out and back to the west with wind mostly coming from the south. At the end of the ride we had to turn SE slighly into the wind and it was crazy. It looked like a scene out of the Wizard of Oz. Long brown corn stalk leaves blowing out of the fields and getting caught in the spokes. The gusts were blowing us all over the road. Some gusts knocked me down to 5 mph. Weather.com indicated the winds were 41 mph by the time we finished the ride.

windy
Copied from the general discussion area:
Our area was hit by high winds all day Sunday, resulting in a lot of tree damage and very wide spread power outages. I road my bike to my brothers house in town, about four miles from me. It was evening but still daylight. Because no one had power, most people where outside enjoying the cool evening air. People waved as I went by, it was like something from a long lost time. When I got to town, it was almost like parade day, there where families out walking together, people sitting on their front porches.
One guy had a camp fire built in his back yard, as I rode by he told me he was cooking supper the “old way”.
There was almost no traffic; I think I saw three cars running. All the gas stations in the county had been without power all day, so people where saving what gas they had for the trip to work Monday. The only lights in town where from candle light, it was pretty dark with no street lights.
I opted to leave my bicycle at my brother’s house in town and rode home with my wife in the car, as I have no lights on the bike, yet. My bother took a ride around town and is now sold on the idea that he needs a bicycle!
It was a ride I will not soon forget.

Genetics have failed me
This week is shot for me. No riding as I left my bikes behind in my house and I had to evacuate this morning. News reports say I won't be able to return to my house until Thursday or Friday. On the other hand, biking is now my least concern on my mind. I just hope my house will not be a total loss.

09/13 - 13 miles nice and slow, recovering from a cold.
That really sucks. My brother in law got flooded out earlier this spring in Terre Haute. That mess is still not cleaned up. It is impossible to appreciate what a flood is like until you see it yourself and the damage / mess it causes. Best of luck to you.

Did the commute thing, which was good for 19 miles total. I need to start looking for a dedicated commuter bike, riding the cervelo back and forth to work just isn't smart.

9/15 - I ran again... I don't get home early enough to get on the bike and make good mileage... even in the summer... the weeknights are my "weakest link" no pun intended, LOL!! Okay, I know I'm the only one laughing... (I've had too much wine for a Monday)
Sooooooooooo... I ran a fun 3.5 miles tonight. Ran it quick as I was in the woods in the dark, boo
When is Spring 2009?... please come quickly...

I rode up to check on some friends of ours to see how they are fairing after our wind storm.
(They are getting along fine) about 1.5 miles.
We lost our phone service about 8pm but got our electric back on about 1am I'll take that trade for now...

I don't know how any of you rode this weekend. It has rained constantly here for 2 1/2 days. I think they said 10 inches here. I tried to get to work Monday, by car, and couldn't find a road open east of the state line that goes north. To those living in Munster, I feel for you. Last house we had flooded twice to a depth of about four feet and we lost everything on the lower level, right down to the studs on the walls. The best advice I got then was take your time. You aren't going to fix this in a day.

9-15 managed a 17.2 mph average (normally I'm about 16.7) over my normal 15mile quick loop, thanks in part to some other roadie who flew past me at the bottom of a hill, before I knew it I was halfway up the hill in the big ring without downshifting. Got a bit too competitive.
9-16 was doing the same loop this morning, flatted my rear tire with 4 miles to go. Couldn't find the source, in fact the tube seemed to be holding air, no burrs or punctures able to be found, but I replaced it anyway, to inspect later at home. Used a CO2 inflator. With 2 miles to go the air came out again, used my other CO2 inflator, made it less than a mile before I was again flat, walked the last 1.5 mile since I had no more cartridges. I gotta man up and bring a frame pump on my roadie.

9/16 - Clark Elementary group ride. First time doing this training ride. It was fun... alot of indy teams out getting a workout. 24 miles @ 24.4 mph with bursts up to 35.5mph from what my computer says. I was surprised that I wasn't really tired after this one. Will definitely be doing this one again.
Not bad for only 3 months of biking! Bought my bike back in June... My first ride, I got scared when I hit 15mph. lol.

Rode 23 miles after work today with the Tuesday night crew from Island Park Cycles in Fargo, ND.
Wonderful evening, temps in the upper 70's with a light wind from the north.

I raced tonight. While riding to the race, I realized how dirty my drivetrain was. I didn't think the previous ride was too dirty, but apparently it was. I rushed back home, grabbed my '86 Cannondale Criterium with DT's, popped on my Look's and the saddle/post from my track bike. I fitted myself to the bike really quick and ran off to the race.
I did the A's and I was in a lot of the breaks with some really fast guys. Surprisingly the bike was awesome. The frame was the stiffest thing ever and handled just like a crit bike should. The only problem I experienced was that the brake levers were a little high, making it a little hard to brake from the drops.

9-mile commute home and left the car at work.
In somewhat related news, I broke, of all things, my water bottle cage. Tacx Tao snapped around the upper mounting hole. Sucks. But it is just the excuse I was looking for to buy some more of them.

9/16 - An IPP/FRT night ride from Winfield to Elgin and back. 32 miles.
Some sections are washed out and rutted. Also, a bridge on the FRT is half washed away. It's sketchy out there.
