Final practice before the race today....a light 26 miles with several stops to practice clipping in from a dead stop and getting up to speed. Now I have my gearing selected.

Nothing left to do now but go get all the chocolate milk tonight for "Team Hip" at the race tomorrow.

Good luck everyone!

I'm hoping to get the wife and kids out there as well, but nothing's been formalized yet.

Hip: You gonna have Bill talk about his recovery following his crash at the Trek 100?

I have it recorded in .wav format if there is any interest. Runs about 10 minutes without the traffic report.

It's in my blog.
Not a good day for BF'ers at the Giro.

recursive crashed twice in the same....and from what I read in the racing forum dave 342 was involved as well.

frunkin dropped out of the 4/5, then rocked the junior division. He was racing tough in the second pack when I last saw him.

Cromulent was hanging with the main group toward the back the entire time in the Masters race, but I never hooked up with him afterward.

Me...bah....
It was a joke basically.

I'm still lost in no-man's land, somewhere between lame celebrity race that only gives me a taste, which I'm too good for, and not good enough to be a Cat 5.

Oh well....
Next big cycling event....the BF Hip ride in August!

Yeah, like I wrote in my blog...I'm conflicted about today.

I had a great time overall, but the racing? Well, that left something to be desired.

Yeah...hey psimet....Bill Och was talking to me after my so-called race today about his big crash....and you're not gonna like who he blames! (He's on crutches and STILL looks like he could crush souls with those on a bike!!!!)

More coming....I've gotta get to bed. You know, those two hot laps really wore me out.

Come on Hip! Can't leave us hanging like that!

I did the Trek 100 and heard all sorts of "theories" as to what happened. I'd like to get he take.

In any event, sorry to hear that you're conflicted about your race today Hip. Congrats on the finish anyway! Sounds like itwas a good event . . . just sorry I couldn't make it up there (it just wasn't in the cards).

Sounds like you had fun overall. There's no shortage of races out there, hopefully you can pick and choose those which will satisfy your thirst for the speed and thrill for racing, plus give you a zone of safety that makes you comfortable. I think that the stronger of a rider you are, the safer your races are because you can hit the front, and simply ride with other strong riders. (strong in the usual sense, and in the ability to handle their bike through the hot tar, gravel, wet paint stripes or man hole covers, bumping shoulders, touching wheels, or simply sensing a potentially bad situation and avoiding it). You're well aware of the risk for crashing in a race ... but the reality is that you can crash on your every day rides too. Heck I just went over the handlebars the other day while riding on the bike path at 5 mph! (and I've been riding my bike well over 30 years now) With all it's good and the bad, all it's highs and it's lows .... welcome to the sport!

.....dead on JW. I think you hit the nail on the head there for me.

Now...
To complete Bill's take on the crash and the injuries and all that, and why Psimet and BFNIC'ers won't like what he told me!

First of all, there the guy is in post-op surgical nylon socks yet, on crutches, pin and plate in his hip from two weeks ago and I swear he could have gotten on a bike and beaten me still....great shape....great guy.

From our chat--
His knee is screwed up now due to the hip injury, but it will come back with therapy. He hopes to be on a bike soon, and was already in quite the pain on a trainer....Jesus....anyway....the Trek 100 crash....

As you may know it came on a downhill in the rain.

Lead guy flatted and went down. The rest of the lead group (this was not the group that Lance was in...he was right up front and pulled out at some point due to the wet conditions....so this was a group that started right behind LA's) had no place to go....everyone piled up going down. Bill said it happened so fast that he never touched the brakes, just pointed the bike and crashed.

He said the group was going too fast for conditions as well, and warnings to slow were not listened to.
His quote went something like this:

"Well, a lot of these guys come up from Illinois where it's real flat and they have no clue how to get down a hill the right way."
