Sometimes I jones for a Chicago dog so bad that I have to stop at the Oscar Meyer stand in the A concourse of the Atlanta airport for a dog. They do a Chicago with the right condiments but Oscar Meyer for the dog is a stretch. Pretty sad but I have walked from E to A for one these poor substitutes.

Now don't get me started on pizza. Lou's is the best no one else makes a a stuffed pizza that is anywhere close. I lived in Palatine for a number of years and hung out in Lou's in Buffalo Grove. Damn, I'm getting hungry and I just finished lunch - must ride bike

+1. Man makes me crave for Johnnys and Gene and Judes, both places have long lines during lunch hour so better be there early or mid afternoon.

We can plan a ride where the rest stops are all the good places in town for food. After 3 or 4 stops, the paceline should be averaging 6-7 mph.

Sounds like a bunch of Northsiders in here, LOL everybody knows they screw up the Chicago Dog every where north of North AVE. I'm from the Southside, spent most of my life right done the block from Sox park and I have eaten more Chicago Dog's then anybody you'll ever meet, almost weekly my whole life. I have had them at Jimmy's, the place that started it all and the Dog and the Bun have to be steamed just right, with the mustard right on the dog, then the onion, relish, tomato wedge, pickle spear and the peppers, NO CELERY SALT! NO Grilled Onions, NO Cucumbers or any thing else.

There's a whole bunch of places all over the Southside still to this day making it the orignal way the same way it was on Maxwell Street back in the day. You want a real Chicago Dog head over to 35th Street just west of Sox Park and hit Frank's. Better yet head over to Jacky's on 54th and Pulaski or AV Anthony's on 63rd just east of Cicero. I can name a whole bunch of places that will offer you a real Chicago Dog that put's to shame many of those imposter's. Same thing with a Polish, it has to be steamed on a flat table cooking with the onions, not deep fried or anything else.

Funny thing is, over here in Southwest MI there's a guy Ben that has a old school cart and makes them the old school way and it kill's just about any other Dog I have ever had and I have had them all over place.

Wait a second here.

You're telling me there is a SOUTH side of Chicago?

Who'd a thunk it!

I've never posted such a popular thread ever. Anyway, so I've got the southside covered, 'burbs, Evanston and Wrigley. What about near downtown/Navy Pier? (Just trying to get all options covered, not sure of plans specifically)

I was born at 148th and Kenwood, sooo south that your not even in Chicago. But it was Cubs all the way in my house. Finally moved North to the Sheffield and Clybourn area after college with many Fri/Sat nights on Division and Sat/Sun days on the beach. Those were the days, late 70s and early 80s.

and a hotdog without celery salt is NOT a hotdog. You probably put ketchup on it, don't you.

Rent is too high for a small hot dog joint to survive downtown near Navy Pier so you better pick a spot before you get there.
While I grew up a northsider an occasional trip to Lindys or Bishops for some fine chili on the southside was not out of the question.

Wow, there is a flash back. I haven't eaten at Mustards Last Stand since I was a kid. Man I loved that place.

I love Hot Dougs, but I think I would only go there if I was looking for something a bit more exotic than a Vienna dog. Hot Dougs is the place that serves venison dogs and the infamous foie gras dog.

Oh... chili!!!

Do you know if the other Lindy's locations are reliable, or is the original location the best?

I have only been to the one on Archer so I cannot vouch. I am not sure if Bishops is even still in business but they were sure were good.
How about Buffalos ice cream on Belmont 30 years ago? Anyone remember that one????
Margies on Division for a rather large Sundae????

Ketchup....What's this Ketchup you talk about!

When Chicago Dog's first came around they didn't have Celery Salt and to this day many of the Old School joints that have been around all this time like Jacky's on the Southside don't use it. I never had Celery Salt on Maxwell Street either and I don't get it on it now. Vienna Beef didn't include it for many years either in their products.

My family owned Lindy's and Gerties for many, many years until the 80's. Bishop's is gone I believe. They used to have a spot on 18th Street and it closed a few years back.

The great thing about Giordano's for us out of towners is, you can order a pizza today and they'll ship it over night for dinner tomorrow.

Forget the Vienna Beef. Best's Kosher are the goods. Their factory store is on 39th St,. if you feel like buying large amounts at ridiculously low prices. The Vienna Beef Factory store is at Damen/Fullerton/Elston, for anyone that doesn't know.

I have to say that I find the Wiener's Circle to be unbearably obnoxious in the late hours. I've witnessed one too many drunken Cubs fans/frat boys making racist comments to the workers.

They're not the best dogs in the city but you can get a late night hot dog from Under Dawg at North and Damen on the weekends. Not as good maybe, but better people watching.

Best pork chop sandwich in the city used to be at a place called Gulfo's up at Montrose west of Elston. No bone, and on some nice French bread.

As far as I can tell, real Chicagoans eat thin crust (cut into small squares) with sausage, onion, and green pepper.

Lets not forget Demon Dawgs (May it rest in peace) on Fullerton and Sheffield for a cheap Dawg and Fries served quickly.
And I do prefer Best Kosher myself when grilling in the yard on the weekends.( Dinner size 4 to the lb)

That's true and love stuffed, but my favorite is a thin crust cut into squares with sausage, mushroom, onion and green pepper and everybody I know eats it the same. There used to be a place called Cavalones on 57th S. Pulaski that made the best. They had a home made sauce that left you always wanting more. Chesdens (spelling) that used to be on Archer for many years had a killer pizza, now, our favorite is Connies.

God, I think after this thread me and the family are taking a ride into Chi-Town this weekend!

No big loss. They weren't Chicago-style hot dogs, anyway.

And too much Peter Cetera love going on in that joint. It had a cool location under the L, but it was a bit creepy with the Chicago band paraphanalia...

I believe we have settled on Mustard's Last Stand. Convenient locale to El and allows us to visit another college campus (one of many seen in our lifetime).
