Chicago-style hot dog

Ok, so it's not bike-related (unless we are talking about special nutritional needs). But it is great lakes related.

I'll be traveling to the Chicago area, parking in Wilmette and heading to Wrigley for the Police concert.

Where's the best place to get an authentic Chicago-style hot dog? I've heard about these, but being from the New York area originally, my familiarity with a regional hot dog is the infamous Nathan's New York style (crunchy, beef, kosher, with crustless bun).

There is only one place on the north side to go - The Weiner Circle at 2622 N Clark St.
https://maps.google.com/maps?num=100&...00139065848082

Double char dog through the garden with a side of cheese fries. The extremely pasty white guy is the owner and prefers to be called dickhead by his patrons and employees. It is best from 2-3 in the morning and definately hurl profanities at all those who work there.

uh.....iab....that wasn't the owner. It was actually a statue along the lakefront, but I didn't have the heart to tell you. You were in no shape for explanations.

Funny, a local meat market serves these up in Red Wing, Mn and they are damned good eats. I had one for lunch and it isnt sitting well right about now...but still so very worth it!

Local place uses "sport peppers", mmmm tasty!

"Mel's Hot Dog" here in Florida. Ex Chicagoan who has done extremely well here after leaving the great white north. It is next to Busch Gardens an Busch Blvd. Tampa's best secret for the Illinois tourists.

Do not ask for a Chicago Dog "with this" or "without that" because you will be executed at sundown.

Look for any place that has a Vienna Beef sign hanging out front. They are all over the place.

Now I'm hungry. Thanks a lot!

With all due respect, if i'm "touring" i don't want to "tour" home...away.

That said, my dad is the most popular guy in town when he brings the vienna beef down to the family in south texas

Portillo's (all over the suburbs) also serves a good Chicago style hot dog.

But if you really want to experience the taste of Chicago, I'd skip the dogs and get some real Italian Beef (Mr. Beef, or almost anywhere), and stuffed pizza (Edwardo's and Bacino's were my favorites).

Dude, you sound like you're from New York, you probably want to fold your pizza in half . The ONLY way to eat a dog is through the garden, anything else, you should be burned at the stake.

+1 on the Italian Beef. Italian beef dipped is so freaking good.

Thanks for this thread, Wiswell! I have made the executive decision to stop at Portillo's on the way home from work to bring the family some good dogs.

I like my floppy pizza but only because it's so hard to find a good deep dish 'round here

The guy i use to work for use to make awesome deep dish, but over the course of the 6 years i was working for him, he lost his touch. Shame really.

Also, three years ago after a football outing (lineman ya know...) we stopped at Ginos East in Elgin...something in one of the 4 slices of deep dish i ate made me puke for the next 36 hours...it took me a long time to get back into my deep dish groove.

Oh yeah, piss off for such a comment!

There's your problem. You went to Ginos East in Elgin.

Everyone knows the farther away from the actual city of Chicago you get, the worse the deep dish pizza.

Hot Doug's.

Count on waiting an hour in line. It's worth it, especially if it's Friday or Saturday, when duck-fat fries are available.

A fine, fine selection. Gotta love that fluorescent green relish.

I prefer Byrons when I'm sober, 1017 West Irving Park, which is a few blocks due north of Wrigley.

[edit: For Christmas, my brother sent me a box full of Vienna beef dogs, sport peppers, poppy seed buns and the aforementioned nuclear relish. Mmmm.]

Poor-T-Joe's (said with hispanic accent) rocks. Study in ordering efficiency.

As for Beef....I ate at Mr. Beef in Arlington Heights every Friday for over a year. Changed jobs and haven't been back since. Thanks a lot for reminding me.

Real Chicago hot dog is easy to find in Chicago. Just tell the person behind the counter, "Everything on it" and you'll be handed a real Chicago hot dog.

It's been stated already, but can never be overstated....

NO KETCHUP ON YOUR CHICAGO STYLE HOT DOG.

Skip Portillo's. Go anywhere but Portillo's.

Lot's of great hot dog joints in Chicago. The place I go to is on my Tuesday route, but it's way on the Southside which isn't anywhere near where you'll be, but iab's suggestion sounds like a winner. I'm going to have to try it. Nothing beats an attitude to go with your Chicago style dog.

+1 on Mr Beef. Best beef I've ever had. My stomach is growling just thinking about it...I gotta get one this week. The one I go to is on Erie and Franklin I think...a block or two west of the Rock and Roll McDonalds.

Since you'll be relatively close, I suggest you also stop by Jim's, and get THE original Maxwell Street polish (everything is mustard, onions, and peppers). It used to be on the corner of Maxwell and Halsted, but they moved one block east right next to 94. Get off on the Roosevelt exit and it's right across the light. You can also buy pr0n and socks there too!

Enjoy your stay in Chi-town!
