no, seriously.... tears are streaming down my face and there is coffee all over the keyboard.
Greatest ride report. EVER.
I didn't have my gps data, but I would estimate that we were cruising at about 75mph with the brakes on thanks to the hurricane force gale.

Nice report. I too am laughing uncontrollably in my office. Strange to observers outside my window because today is not a good day at work....

Kenal0 ride report
Lessons learned
1. Practice track stand. Always be on the bike. Even when waiting for everyone to get ready.
2. Eat oatmeal cream pies, they are cheaper than Cliff bars. (both 1 and 2 courtesy of Recursive)
3. Never forget that slow rider sweep thing means that if you are the slowest then you are the sweeper!
4. It is nice riding with someone that can fix a flat in a proficient manner. (Thanks Cylowe)
5. Use the thin side of the tire lever.
6. As slow as you think the tractor in front of you is going, it is probably faster than you! (Is that correct Psimet?)

Any tractor that manages to pass you () is worth drafting.
Come to think of it, you can substitute pretty much anything moving down the road and both still hold true.

Great reports and pictures, everyone! Thanks, Psimet for organizing the ride. It was fun - even for those who ( like me ) came for one loop only. Most of the time I ride solo, so riding with a group was a great experience. First several miles of Loop 2 ( while everybody was still together) were probably the fastest I ever done on flat surface.
Great time with JT1, Voldemort and Psimet in "Group A-" of Loop 2 - thanks guys!

Unfortunately no...cookie inventories are way down. I project a stock out condition within a day or so.

So...out of the gate, going pretty good in loop 1, hanging with the speed demons, right behind MR Cheddar. After Recursive finishes his combo water-bottle-juggling-and-bike-riding act, he loops back past me...the closest I'll ever be to him for the next 6-7 hours Five minutes later, I'm barely hanging on, and look down to see 28.5mph, and alll of a sudden a cheese-powered blur shoots by as if I'm standing still When he pops back into the lead, and the group PICKS UP SPEED from the 28.5, I know I'm in the wrong group, and start dropping back. Short of falling off a tall cliff, I know I can't keep up 28+ for any length of time.
Fortunately, with a no-drop policy, I'm feeling okay. Apparently, no-drop has a different meaning in Elgin than St. Charles, 'cause I know Psimet wouldn't "drop" Iab and me. No problem, we knew there was another group behind the two of us. When that group took a short-cut to catch up with the first group, Iab and I were, without knowing it, let's see...I know it's not called "dropped" when everyone else has left you behind to struggle through the vicious, nasty wind. Oh, that IS what it's called?
Lessons learned:
No-Drop means- well I actually don't know what it means
60, 70, 80 miles on the flat-as-a-pancake, wind-protected bike trails = NOTHING in preparation out in the hinterlands.
I'd rather die trying to stay in the draft of the frontrunners at 28.5, than a slow, agonizing, painful death at 12-14 mph alone into the wind.
Psimet, thanks for putting this together.
Cylowe, thanks for pulling me through that nasty stretch into the wind.
Wireless, JT1, nice riding with you guys.
Nice meeting new people, even if some were genetically engineered bionic cycling mutants.
Everybody...good times, good times Same time next year?

Now....many thanks to my wife who put up with all this internet crap, and time away on the bike. Not to mention the amazing pluthera of cookies she manufactured, packaged, and labeled...
Thanks to CyLowe, iab, and Voldemort for being the perpetual home team helping out with whatever they could.
Thank you Recursive and Dave342 for risking travel South of the Cheese Curtain without a valid visa. It meant a lot that you guys showed.
Kenal0, sorry I didn't sport the 7-Eleven jersey as well. Maybe next ride.
Thank you to everyone who came out. I consider this year a success. I love putting this thing on and I am looking forward to next year. I am also looking forward to other area invitationals.
Final Tally:
KOR Overall: Recursive
KOR Loop1: Recursive
KOR Loop2: Recursive
KOR Loop3: Recursive

I only saw 28mph on my computer once. Granted it was as I went through it on my way to 30 to bridge the gap
I spent a lot of time in the 12-16mph range. Finished overall with something like 16mph average...but of course I was sweeping, right?

Ok, quick highlights.
Loop 1
This was my first century and because I was still getting over a bad cold, I was pretty cautious and didn't go out very hard. The first leg wasn't too bad, 38 miles, avg. 19.3 mph with a 10 minute break and another unintended 5 minute "Where the hell are we?" map break. Nietsmas then took a long pull getting us back and as we make a turn, I kick it up to take my turn up front. As I pull along side, we're doing 26mph and I say "at this speed, you can pull". We get back to the lot and I cough up some more phlegm but feel pretty good. Didn't want to challenge recurse for KOM because I'm playing it safe (and couldn't have beaten him if I had tried). I did call out him downshifting and getting ready to jump though .
Loop 2
OK, now I'm feeling a little better and we start out of the box pretty hard. We are averaging around 25 mph and I start to feel pretty good. After a long 20 minute break, my power meter runs out of memory as I forgot to download after leg 1. Doh! The way back was tough and we were really pushing. The wind made it hell as you got very little draft even though we were setting up big echelons. Again I passed on KOM. We worked hard and now it was major chow time and refueling in the lot. Still hacking a little.
Loop3
OK, I'm getting stronger but still have no power in my legs I think because I have been sick. 31.9 miles avg 18.2 mph, avg 92 cadence peek at 156 (I gave a brief shot at KOM). This time the pull gods are clearly against me. Every time I get to the front we are heading dead into the wind or turn into the wind as soon as it's my turn. It was BRUTAL! At one point, I handed the pull off to Shider who says "I'm not goin' any faster!" It really was tough. Then finally we got some downwind and took off back up to 25 mph. We had another long break waiting for the others to catch up. When it's time to go again, I feel better than I've felt all day. I crank it up to 25 and recursive is on my wheel and he says we've lost the others and I say ... "hell with them" and keep motoring. nice guy huh? Recursive drops back and I motor it back solo at better than 21 mph. Felt quite good and could have gone out much harder in the earlier loops.
PSI's cookies were great; what a nice wife. Recursive's marshmallow oatmeal patties were great. I too was an idiot and didn't put on sunscreen. Duh!
Had a great time meeting everyone and a special thanks to PSI for putting it on. Look forward to next year.

As soon as I have my desktop up and running I'll post some data. I'm on my laptop right now. The computer upgrade wars continue. (:
