As I stumble out of bed at 7:00 a.m. with the new pup happily bouncing around to go outside, I can almost feel the cold air from the bedroom wall next to me.
I pull about four layers over what has become an all-too-present gut, then lift my weak little soft hairy legs one by one into sweat pants.
The Campy hat pulled low over my head, I slide on some old shoes and jacket, grab some gloves still half asleep and bend over to clip the leash on "Gabby" as she patiently waits to do her morning duty in the front yard.
It's cold.
On the front walk I reach down to grab the morning paper, noticing on the way down that ever-nagging gut again. What has become of me?
Luckily even the pup is cold, her front paw already being held up in the air. She's done her business and wants no part of the usual play session out there.
Off come the layers once inside. I hand her a small treat and glance out the window at the thermometer.

Hi Hip, registration for the horribly hilly hundreds opens in about 50 min. Sign your butt up for that ride and you will get motovated to lose the gut. I am over in the Madison area, so I know what you mean about the temp.

I can only imagine the level of depression throughout the entire state should the Packers lose to the Giants on Sunday night.

With all the snow and ice we have had this winter I am way behind in my outdoor riding as compared to last winter. I have managed only one 30 mile ride outside since Thanksgiving. Now that football season is mostly over, winter starts to really drag. At least during the peak of the season, college and pro games make it easier to ride on the rollers and trainer for the long 2+ hour weekend rides.
As far as the Pack go, they have already far surpassed my expectations for this season. I hope they win and make it to the super bowl, they should. I have just really enjoyed watching the magical season they have put together, all the better in that nobody really expected much of anything from them.
edit: only 30 min. till the HHH registration

Siberian husky, fenced yard, open door, dog goes out. She spends as much time as she likes, -10F is nothing to her (supposed to be able to handle -70F). Bark, open door, in she comes. Fences not only make for happy neighbors, they make dog owners happy also.

Cars are so over-rated Hip. Spend your $$ on bicycles instead.
Look at it this way:
Convinced yet?
Look at it this way:
- Every mile that you put on a car degrades its value. Every mile that you put on a bicycle increases YOUR value.
- Every mile you put on the engine of a car weakens it. Every mile you put on YOUR engine strengthens it.
- The three things to look forward to with a car: Speeding tickets, insurance and registration. Three things to look forward to with a bicycle: Beer, pizza and ice cream.
- A sports car conveys the message, "Definitely compensating for something". A bicycle conveys the message, "Day-am buddy, you're hard-core!"
Convinced yet?

Depression? Please.
Today a few of us went to the Chicago Bike Swap in Mt. Prospect. It was fun watching people get excited to find just the right gear. I found some hubs for a SS conversion I'm working on (slowly) for a neighborhood riding. Psimet bought an twenty year old steel Tommaso. Yes, a whole bike. It was fun watching the deal go down.
And Hip, for the HHH, you can always volunteer to work the course. That's what I'm doing this year.
I'm starting to get the itch. Been hitting the treadmill and watching the portions on the plate at mealtime. The gut starts to fade.
Get crackin' Radio Boy. Warm weather is closer than you think.

Speaking of dogs ... I was reading about cold record temps the other day and ran across this:
Wilfred "Wilf" Blezard remembers the coldest recorded day in North America's history. Now 82 years old, Blezard was one of four weathermen stationed at the Snag airport in Yukon, Canada, on February 3, 1947. On that day, the temperature dropped to 81 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
"We had six dogs that stayed outside the barracks," Blezard said over the telephone from his home in Grande Prairie, Alberta. "Their breath created quite a fog above them."
www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF16/1630.html
It's not the heat ... it's the humidity. It's not the cold ... it's the wind.
I love the cold ... but I'm weird and I know it.
(I was out shooting pics in the cold Sunday morning ... I should have them up in my blog later today after I get XP installed and running on that PC)

It's so cold here that my pen was freezing up while trying to do a cycle count in the warehouse!
