Anyone in indianapolis,In

I live in indy close to greenwood. there are not a lot of parks around here. But if your from the area let me know . I took a hybrid and converted it to a more road bike. I changed the rear gears and put a trekker handlebar on. It is faster and rides better. i am about 5" in more instead of upright therefore i get the wind to go over my back instead of head on. heres a picture

I may be joining you soon. I live in Chicago right now, but I just interviewed at Lilly in Indianapolis. If I get the job, I am looking to move into the Greenwood Southport area.

It kind of depends where you are at and what type of riding you want to do. The good thing is that you can get to rural areas pretty easily...probably your best bet for recreational road riding in that area. The bad thing is that you might have to be on some pretty heavily travelled roads to get to those areas.

What major streets/intersections are you close to?

Near the same area - willing to recommend roads of reasonable traffic - I've hit most all in Perry/Greenwood area and have been on them with a bike since the 80s.

you should make your way over to southport and go west to mann rd. and then go south on mann. there are some nice shots out there... especially after highway 144.

You can take Madison south through Greenwood to Main, east (Left) on Main to the Valle Vista area. There's a pathway on the south side of road if you want off the road more, then it continues past I-65. Main (now Greenwood Rd. at that point) runs further east as Rocklane and there's nice rural settings out there with some vistas to the south to be seen. That pathway also connects around to the south at Emerson to Craig Park.

I wonder how I missed this thread. The east side route SS mentioned is a very nice ride. I rode the route south on Mann road down to 144 yesterday. Lots of places to ride around here. Have you ever rode with BGI?

Re- Anyone in Indianapolis

I guess this is a bit late for that thread, but- I live on the east side, and generally
ride to work. (Really short ride- 1.4 miles each way... I live just north of I-70
off of Franklin Rd, and work at the Indiana State Police post.)
The Fall Creek trail from roughly Skiles Test Park to the State Fairgrounds
is a nice recreational ride. No streets to cross at all, and usually not too
congested. I have ridden along Pleasant Run down to Madison, to the
Circle City Bicycle emporium. Pleasant Run Parkway is rather nicer than
the trail, as far as making good time. Easier to dodge cars than un-attentive
people on the trail. I am hoping to survive my first Hilly Hundred next weekend...
hope to cross paths, so to speak...

Best regards...

Hi Houdini, I live in Greenwood and ride to IUPUI campus (VA) every day. Dunelt 1.4 miles is better than none. Shelby street is a nice North/south corridor to avoid Madison Ave. Might see ya at the Hilly, I will be on a Raliegh grand prix with a red helmet. Other than that I have to wait and see what is clean.

Making- thanks for the tip about Shelby. It is a bit nicer than Madison.
I expect to be fairly nondescript at the Hilly... gray helmet, blue Bianchi
Strada, probably wearing a backpack. I just cannot cram enough stuff
in a seat bag and jersey pockets to be content.

Shooters- wow a titanium Raleigh- I always think of old English 3 speeds
when one mentions Raleigh, but they do make some very nice, modern
bikes. Nothing wrong with the old 3 speeds, either- Raleigh probably made
them best.

If you need a backback, you're taking too much. There's 3 stops along the way to refill fluids and snacks/food. Granted it may be chilly at the start, but you should use some easy to store layers - arm warmers, a light jacket if needed - one that can fold/roll small enough to go in a pocket. Put a spare tube and some tire levers plus maybe some patches in a under-seat bag and you're done.

Hey i have a potential problem. Every once in a while i ride towards traffic and some idiot wants to turn in on me. Does anyone have any ideas as far as a devise to alarm people before they cut in front of me. I don't want to put a horn on my bike.
Now when i rode a motorcycle years ago i had a marine airhorn. That would wake the dead.

I am not trying to sound holier than thou because I ride against traffic about 100 yards on US 31 (of course it is before 5 am) but anyway, why do you have to ride against traffic anywhere anyone can turn into to you?

To answer your question. I think someone makes a horn that uses an empty 2 liter bottle for pressure. Zoots or Zoom or something like that.

mostly when i leave family fitness i go straight up 31 just past stop 12 then make a left. Thats like 1 mile all on the same side. I normally do not travel against traffic but i know the route. Maybe your correct about that. Even though its a short distance i shouldn't be starting bad habits. After all, all it takes is one time. FFT...David

Since you mention your route, I'll suggest a different route to remove the issue - go through the parking lot to Stop 11 by Donato's, then take Stop 11 East (either on the sidewalk or in the road) to Madison, cross Madison and go in the parking lot by John Wayne's then take the access road along Madison to Stop 12 (at Fazoli's). No need to ride against traffic in the right turn lane of US 31, plus less traffic overall anyway. The alternative would be to go south on Shelby instead (Shelby was just repaved last week) to Stop 12. The downside is that Stop 12 between Shelby and 31 is in terrible condition. I would say the worst part about 31 is the speed most cars are traveling that you may contend with.

Yes Shelby is so much nicer now. They really need to pave it all the way to Thompson road. take 10 minutes off my commute if I did not have to watch so close for holes.
