    Wisconsin's 400 bike trail

Has anyone here ridden this trail? I'm looking at some of the pics on their website and it looks like a very nice trail system. I do have a question or two however if anyone has experience with the trail.

Is it a crushed limestone path all the way from Reedsburg and Elroy? From what I can see it looks like is but was just wondering if there were any asphalt stretches along the way.

Also, I was looking at a website for the Elroy portion, and it mentioned something about needing to buy a trail pass? Is that accurate? Does one really need to pay to ride the path?? I guess I'm used to trails here in the Chicago area being free to ride them.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Yes it is crushed and screened limestone surface and yes you need a state trail pass in WI. I actually rode from Trempeleau to Reedsburg on the trail system. Very nice, I was loaded on a week long trip. http://www.bike4trails.com/Bike4Trailsmap.pdf

All of the state trails in Wisconsin require a pass. You can either buy a one day pass or a year pass. It is pretty cheap, and they have some pretty nice trails up there. $4 a day or $20 a year last time I looked.

I live near the 400 trail and ride it often. I find it to be more scenic than the Elroy-Sparta trail without the tunnels. Yes, it is crushed limestone all the way from Elroy to Reedsburg. We had major flooding in the area last summer, so some bridges were washed out between Wonewoc and La Valle, but they should be repaired by now. If you are looking for some food try Trailbreak Pizza in La Valle - great pizza. Enjoy your ride!
