Who's in? - Winfield June 6 & 7

This year I'm only racing Sunday in the Cat 5 40+. I expect this to be my last Cat 5 since I'm requesting an upgrade to Cat 4.

I may be out watching the races at a friend's house on Sat. His house is on the course and they make a party of it.

MJH2 06-01-09 09:21 PM

In for both!

I haven't raced in forever (the Memorial day drop fest does not count). So, I'll either come out strong, or get shot out the back.

Either way, I'll beat you on saturday if you're not racing! ;)

Are there any attractions/museums/funky shopping opportunities nearby that might keep my wife and/or dog occupied?

Possibly. Winfield itself has Cantigny which is an interesting blend of both beautiful open space and Military History. It's actually pretty neat.

In Geneva (two towns over... And this is a shameless plug) there is both a giant mall and a historic downtown (with boutiques and other crap for out-of-towners). There is plenty of stuff in the Fox Valley.

If that is even remotely interesting, let me know. I'd be happy to give you a ride over to the race.

Thanks, I'll talk to Mrs F about it. She gets kinda bored at races, and she gets kinda bored sitting at home, and she gets kinda bored driving to races as well.

Still looking for a bike-cam bearer for Sat (and maybe Sun). Just say'n. :innocent:

(I don't think Recursive is racin')

Psimet2001 06-02-09 06:25 AM

Racing both days. Carlos I would take mjh up on that offer. Along the Fox river it's boutique chick shopping heaven. This is where the soccer moms of the west burbs of Chicago go to spend money.

I have to go to a cougars game after the race but you should stick around if you can.

recursive 06-02-09 06:59 AM

Did I read that right?

recursive 06-02-09 07:04 AM

Actually, I'm starting to think about doing this race. My non-racing obligation seems to be going away, and the state roads has a hill in it. I don't do those.

What's involved? How big/weight is the camera/battery/etc. I'm racing Sunday at 9:40am.

John Wilke 06-02-09 06:04 PM

Self contained. 150g / 5.2 oz complete. Attached with velcro, zip ties for extra security. It will not fall off, unlike the factory mounts - they can break due to fatigue. Can also be mounted on the front of the stem. (will have a photo of that in a bit). :)

Winfield twilight is an awesome race. I really enjoyed the atmosphere last year. That hill is a real grinder and will break the race up for sure. The descent is really fun. Hit it hard its not too steep look intimidating but not too slight to take lightly--big ring: 21 or 23, depends how you like it-- I took it too hard and finished 10th. Sunday's hill is steep but, I think, easier than at twilight. On that one I chose the proper gear and did well in the 30+ cat 5s.

I'm not doing it this year because I'm working for a teammate on Sunday at SP. But I would love to do Winfield--if it were USAC I'd prob make an exception.

Geez, I'm getting snotty in my race selections.:innocent:

Good luck!

Psimet2001 06-02-09 09:16 PM

I might be willing to carry it.

John Wilke 06-02-09 09:23 PM

I'll be there Saturday for sure. Would really like to get video of that twisty descent! Takes just a few minutes to set up and I'm getting plenty of recording time so there shouldn't be too much rush before the race to get it going. Maybe Recursive can give his opinion since he's had it on his bike twice so far.

recursive 06-02-09 09:36 PM

I didn't notice the camera in either position. The mount is stable and solid. The camera is small and light. I'm already several pounds overweight, and when considered with my "heavy" bike, 150g is vanishingly small, considering how awesome the result is.

Psimet2001 06-02-09 10:21 PM

JW - let me know. You know I will carry it. I forgot what I registered for. I think I am doing 3 races this weekend.

ColorChange 06-03-09 06:18 AM

Maybe on Sunday. Maybe. ;)

John Wilke 06-03-09 09:20 AM

FYI I did a bench test with the cam and got 1hr 49mins of video. Factory claims 56mins is max. Why? Because it just so happens that the card I bought at Walmart is formatted with FAT32 instead of FAT or FAT16 which only what the factory techs used.

Peloton-Pix is pushing the limits of technology to increase your cycling pleasure!

:roflmao2:

recursive 06-03-09 09:31 AM

Actually, the camera probably ended up with the extra FAT after I used it.

John Wilke 06-03-09 09:46 AM

Well, that's a Win-Win ! :p :thumb:

Stop trying to be a tease. If you're going to do it, man up and tell us you'll be there. If not, then get your wussy arse out of the racer thread!

Psimet2001 06-03-09 10:18 AM

Nice. Now he's in for sure.

Possibly. He'll get as far down that flyer as the word "criterium" and then get all wussified. Crits are more dangerous than that road race in Oakbrook, you know!

CyLowe97 06-03-09 10:45 AM

Crits can't scare CC. You should have seen him risk life and limb flying blind through an intersection in front of four cars at the PRP. The rest of us stopped because, well.... because we didn't want to be killed.

No Fear, that ColorChange....

;)

Psimet2001 06-03-09 10:53 AM

Yes but he does have an irrational fear of the combination of the words cat 5 crit.

....but not of a dangerous "road race" in which he basically finished top 10.
