Ohio State University

I'm considering this school for college next year; HOWEVER, in the housing handbook it states that:

In halls without bike rooms, bikes are not permitted in the building. Bicycles may not be stored in individual rooms or suites.
Has anyone who has attended OSU kept or tried to keep a bicycle inside a dorm? The bike rooms are an option, but I'd still prefer keeping a road bike in my room.

My daughters kept the bikes in their room at Morill Towers. The rate of bike theft is high around campus.
A lot of students take the seat off when not riding.
Is your friend thinking of the OSU Club Bike Team?

Don't knock it 'till you try it. But to answer...those of us who can't get into Madison or Illinois because we ****ed off in high school but still want to go to a big school that is close enough to home.

Nearly 50% of the student body is from the Chicago Area.

I think I've been to Iowa. It was pure Hell.
And my neighbors a few doors down are from Iowa, and they're weird as sh*t. Seriously, they are the weirdest people I've ever seen; and I've been working in restaurants since I was 12, and have spent 2.5 years at a bike shop.

To the OP's question, my buddy says that everyone either keeps their bike in their room or in the basement where it's locked up. Still he said to keep it in the dorm room.
Giving up space is better than having no bike.

My experience with having my daughter at OSU is: anything of the least value that isn't both securely locked up and hidden will be stolen.

Thanks for everyone who replied; its nice to know that the no-bikes rule isn't exactly actively enforced.

I hope you don't mean within the dorms, because it's not exactly easy to hide a bike in such a small room.

Go Hawks!!

Spent three years in IC. Three of the best of my life. Wish I had been a cyclist then. I can only imagine the miles I could have eaten up on the back roads!!

I would love to get my hands on a Hawkeye cycling jersey.

...and no, I have nothing constructive to add here.

you could go to IU where not only do they let you keep your bike in your dorm, they pretty much demand that you do.

1. I probably wouldn't decide on a school based solely on a rule that isn't enforced anyways
2. I got at least full tuition+$1500/yr from OSU, and even if I were to apply now (if its allowed) to any other school, I wouldn't be considered any scholarships anyways.

if i choose any other school, it would probably be Penn State, where i got $11000/yr (likely in-state 2nd year on) and which explicitly states that bikes can be stored inside dorms.

Those don't really look like "your" bikes, unless everyone somehow decided to buy the same one. Nice track, too.

Where did you come across that?

The one year that i could stomach living in the dorms at OSU I lived in a two person dorm room in Stradley Hall (one of the south halls). We could hardly fit the beds and the desks that were provided for us let alone a bike. Not much space to store it on the wall either. I am not familiar with other 'suite' style rooms but I have huge doubts that they have enough space.
The rules being enforced is almost 100% up to your residence hall director and your RA, and of course your roommate who has to be ok with fitting a bike in the already cramped room. As in real life in dorms too some people are super obsessed with following the rules even if they don't make any sense or breaking it doesn't hurt anyone. So your situation totally depends on where you live.
People are right about stealing on campus. It happens a lot and all the time and everywhere. When it comes to bikes, get a U-lock and a chain lock and lock the **** out of your bike everytime. If you have a nice expensive saddle, it will show itself. Take it off with you (you'll look 'kuul' in the classroom too even though it is a bit of a hassle). If you are worried about quick release tires, damn... take it with you to your room every night.
But if you don't have expensive parts, or if your bike is not brand new, shiny and with no scratches, your individual parts will not be in much danger, because there is not that many people who know about good, expensive bike parts on campus... to be tempted to go through the trouble to steal it. When you leave your bike outside, lock it as a deterrent. Don't leave your bike in one place all the time. Ride it as much as you can and constantly change place. Don't make your bike flashy, make it blend in.

I don't think there is any need to be paranoid or worried as long as you take into account that you need to protect your bike.

I need to renew this thread. I'm heading to OSU in the fall, and I really, really need to know if it will be possible for me to bring my bike with me. I'm hoping to have a Cannondale Caad 9 by the time I go, and I don't plan on just locking up my new bike outside my dorm. Is there anywhere that I can store my bike overnight?
