i abandoned just couldn't get over the mental block and risk bonking out on the road and having to wait for a car.

Wiswell: Both maps and cue sheets for the DLD. I usually rely on the maps. Cue sheets make my head hurt.
I need to go back and check, but CC mentioned that at one split the cue sheet was marked left when it should have said right (or vice versa). Need to verify that.
One of the tricky things about the DLD is that the 200km+ route doubles back on itself after the Pleasant Ridge stop. Riders end up back at Roberts, Amacher Hollow, High Point, the Tower Hill rest stop, and then on to Upper Wyoming again before splitting to the Clyde loop. After a certain amount of time in the saddle, thinking about this color route versus that color route can be rough for a sun-toasted brain.
I remembered that turn onto Hillside School from rides past, but I can easily see where folks riding on 23 with more traffic than the rest of the route that riders would be paying attention to cars whizzing by more than to the route markers off to the side.
In all, though, this is a brilliantly organized ride. The route is super tough. The stops are stockpiled with all the goods. The volunteers were cheerful. The swag is useful.... socks!
One other thing... I need to thank Jester for the spot on the ride. Next year we'll see you there, too, right?!?

There's a chance that I've possibly done way too many crazy endurance running and cycling events so I wouldn't pay much attention to any advice I dispense. It's all a game to me ....I also have these mantras that I repeat over and over. But, honestly, the harder it gets, the more I like it. I'm truly not exactly averse to pain.
I remember one 50k running event where there was a hill that we had to use a rope to get up it was so slick with mud. If you need any advice on getting up a hill with a rope.....I can just tell you to NOT put the rope between your legs.
Also, I wouldn't exactly recommend only staring down at the pavement while riding a bike.

But it was really exciting golf!
With age (59 next mos) comes a limited amn't of wisdom, so I chose only to do the 100k. Additionally, I measure performance not in how fast the bike and I go but in how fast my heart does-max of 181-not that I had targeted and specific number.
In spite of much liquids and food, I cramped badly on cty Z and had to stop and strech for a few minutes. I'm sure everyone could hear me whimpering like a lost puppy! I think I was most impressed by the one armed guy who blew by us on the rosy ln hill.
We had no troubles with signage being mis-placed or removed. I only checked the map once as there was a turn I did not remeber from the 2007 ride reflecting a route change. Much as it pains me to say it-I'm sure I'll be back next year. Hopefully with a few more miles and a few less pounds under the belt.

What a ride! I'm already looking forward to next year. And the only walking I'm going to do will be at the rest stops.

Line 49 on the cue sheet has a left turn off of Upper Wyoming onto Weaver Rd at 50.9 miles. (blue arrow, first loop)
Line 73 on the cue sheet has a right turn at the same intersection (continuing on Upper Wyoming rd) at 91.5 miles. (yellow arrow, second loop).
No worries. Just setting the record straight.

The official results are up and ready for possible corrections. No photos are up yet but it looks like they should be available soon.

Although I didn't ride...
I rode the QuadruPedal 35 mile route with a co-worker of mine in May. He had signed up for the dld 100k and and hadn't been on a bike for more than 11 miles at a time this year. At the QPC he had what I called "a good walk" as he was unable to power his bike to the top of any of the 7 decent hills on the 35 mile course. This was his wake up call. I seriously doubted that he would be able to finish the dld 100 given his current conditioning and only a little over three months to train.
So he started training at the end of June. Another bad sign...
I started him out with the outbound from HP to BVLD (and a return on the flat bike trail to HP). It took a couple weeks before he was able to pull this off, but he was still walking the major hills. Soon he was able to make the 21 miles to BVLD with only the occasional hill walk toward the end.
Then something happened. I put him on the HP to BVLD to TH route with a SAG back and things started to click. By Aug 1 he had done every hill on the course but was still walking Roberts and had only hit a max distance of 60 miles.
One last long ride on 8/8 and then a taper to ride day. Guess what? He did it. 100K on a hybrid and he didn't even walk Roberts ! Since I couldn't ride I rode vicariously through my friend Roeloff, Nel who did what I couldn't imagine him being capable of in May.
I know that it's no 300K, but still I'm really energized by seeing a story like his. For me it makes the effort of putting on an event like this totally worth while.

^^ cool story. Thanks for putting this on, it is a class act all the way!
Meanwhile, not to make it about me, but ... there is no result for me in the preliminary results!
Any chance my result is hiding somewhere and still might get posted?
I have been waiting impatiently for results to come out, this is disappointing!

Line 47 is the right turn off of Hillside School Road onto County Z.
Line 48 is the right turn onto Upper Wyoming (this is the same right turn onto Upper Wyoming that happens later in the ride)
Line 49 is the Left turn off of Upper Wyoming onto Weaver Road.

Great story. You're right...I couldn't make DlD this year and while I really enjoyed reading the other rider stories, this one warms the heart. Thanks for sharing it.
Looking forward to the Quadrupedal in spring--I have no excuse to miss that one.

SmokinMiles coming in with a smile on her face. How the heck did you muster the strength to do that?
