Cycling Study
just wanted to let everyone know about this cycling studay i am a doing.
the study is to test out a new kind of PowerAde. the study is done at Provident Clinical Research Center in Addision, IL. You get paid $500 for 5 visits and basically cycle for a few hours each time, so get paid to ride; nice.
Also, because it is part of the data they need, you get a free max performance test including FREE VO2 max, free max prower, heart rate, etc.
check it out at providentcrc.com
note that i am a participant and am just trying to find more cnadiates for them. i dont work there

Is this cycling done indoors on a trainer? I don't think I could do that for "a few hours each time", not even for $500.

You won't be 'riding for hours'. If it's a max test, then it's 15 mins or less of ramping up to your *MAX* plus warm up and cool down. They may take urine or blood but I can't find any info via that link. The Gatorade Corp (who makes PowerAde) has been doing clinical trials for 20+ years. We used to ride these for free, just to get a max test. Now they're paying? JUMP ON IT! It's the best torture you'll find! (If you've ever done a Max VO2 test you'll agree).

Along these lines, if you're college age and live near a college or university that has a human performance lab, kinesiology program or similar, you can probably get a max VO2 study, body fat %, or who knows what done for free. Just stop in the lab when it's open, introduce your self ("I'm a bike racer" or "I ride my bike a lot") and ask if there's any studies being done because you'd be interested in participating. There are always grad students looking for subjects. If your're older, you may be able to buy your way in for a small fee. "I'd like my % body fat tested, do you guys do that?". Great way to learn more about your body and your training.

My bad, just noticed the age requirement. Maybe they'll consider me as two 30-year-olds.

Please let me know if you find out.

damn, I was really hoping for 500 dollars to fund a cycling trip. But I wouldn't be able to cycle after they take blood.

they take live one small 2" vile most days, during some days (the 4 days when you are testing the new product) they will put in a cathater and draw your blood four seperate times, but still the same total amount.

They don't want T1 diabetics...we process sugar too mechanically.
Though, a study using diabetics would be great because you would clearly benefit the diabetic community by helping me to pay down my growing credit card bill.

interesting about the diabetic thing; i wouldnt think that that would change the results much. i was told that they are testing different acid/base mixtures to determine if a mroe or less or either increases performance and/or reduces fatigue.

I'm sure it is an ins. thing. We're an added liability for reasons apart from the test, protocol or product. meh, I stopped getting focus group calls a long time ago. Unfortunately, I now have to work for my loot.

ok took some prelim tests this morning, but they were having trouble with the bikes. for the power profile, i was generating so much torque and watts that the clipless pedals wouldnt hold me in and they didnt have the allen screw to tighten it down, sooo i have to take that one again on wednesday (i did feel quite cool to be continually be ripping my cleat out once i got past 1050 watts...the people there were a bit stunned...haha)
vo2, this bike had crap pedals, just crappy ole plastic pedals with some velco to keep you strapped in...yea right...half way through the test i was falling out of the straps and had to abandon the test. i was about 65% max i would say, plenty of gas in the tank and i hit a high of 65.4; not great, but not bad though i really think i have more to give and am pleading with them to let me duct-tape my feet to the pedals adn give me a REAL go at it. i think i could hit 70...maybe more...
hey did anyone else from BF sign up for this and am/did completeing it? post up your results!

Good job. Kinda fun anyway, heh?
The best I ever got was 69.1 ml/min/kg (in a former life) which never won me any races, but at least I could make people suffer rolling over the top of a hill and down the other side.

Is anyone else actually signed up for this? I'm doing a phone screening tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I can get in, but I live in the city and I'm going to need to either take Metra or ride my bike there, neither of which are appealing prospects with this weather. Anybody in the city going to drive up there? I'd love to carpool. Please PM me.
