also the HHH guy says the entrance road to blue mound is under construction, just an fyi

quoted from his fb:
"Looking for some Problem-Solvers!
Problem: Entrance road into Blue Mound State Park is now under construction. Surface of the road for about 600 feet will be gravel for the Horribly Hilly and Insane Terrain rides. Although the final ascent will be black top, we don't want oodles of punctured tires at the base of the ...climb.
Solution: Temporary surface, non-skid, reasonable budget constrictions.
Thoughts??"

I called ahead to the Blue Mound General Store to make sure they will have plenty of these on hand at the half way break:

This early wake up call is not the sacrifice you think it is. This ride is The Awesome.

I've printed out some maps and cue sheets. Good times and good suffering are two days away.

I'm looking forward to it and I'll have my Century bike with a road triple to help me get through it.

I'm also doing the HHH and I'm considering the 200k length.

It will be early for me as well but worth it. I found out our normal manager is off friday so it will be a super late night for me at work, last time this happened I worked until 1am.

it was 2008 when we coined this the Double or Nothing Metric. that year we did this ride on Saturday then hit the Udder Century Sunday, yes the very next day, for 100 miles. one day 62 miles with 6000 feet of climbing and the next day 100 miles in 5 hours (ride time). you had to do both to earn your Double or Nothing Badge. one of my most favorite cycling weekends to date.

the Double or Nothing name actually came about during the 08 BFNIC Spring Classic Ride. he was killing me up the hills. near the end of the ride i darted past and indicated last one to the top buys the first round. well, he grabbed my wheel, timed his jump just right, and hit the top first.

a few minutes later we approached another steep bugger. i dart past again and scream " Double or Nothing." i hit it hard at the bottom as i tend to do sometimes. too hard. midway up he zooms past me again. this was a longer climb though. i was falling back, but then i noticed he let up as he neared the top. i jumped on it hard.

as i neared his wheel the noise from the hard effort and my flapping wind jacket gave me away, maybe even startled Cy, and he droped the hamer one last time for the win.

good times. later.

Will we stop for lunch at Blue Mounds? Or will we just replenish supplies at a gas station/convenience store?

Either is good, I'll reduce my storage & supplies if we are stopping for a meal.

The "store" in blue Mounds is a little convenience shop. Not much to choose from. At that point it all tastes good though.

We'll see you there!

The General Store at the base of Mounds Road has sandwiches, water, gatorade, etc, in the cooler. Bring some cash if you want to refuel. They appreciate riders who have cash. The last time we were in there the lady behind the counter commented about all the riders who use their credit cards.

They make pizzas, too, but I don't think any of us are waiting around for pizza.

And make sure to leave your lit cigarette on the bench when you go in so you can continue puffing away after you buy your stuff in the store.

You really want to stay off my wheel tomorrow because the snot rockets are gonna fly out of my nose in one minute increments. My head is about to explode, my nose is stuffed, my throat hurts.. sick as a dog, but that's what HTFU is for.

Gentlemen,

Would you ride the steel bike with the road triple;

Or the Lynskey built Ti bike with a standard 50 & 39t double;

Both bikes will have a 12-27 10 speed cassette.

If you've never been up there before and don't know these hills, go with the triple. I'm betting others concur.

This just in - a friend is joining me.

Did I get this right, no computers AND dress socks?

So is it like, we add a new rule every year and keep the old rules too? That could get interesting over time.

You are allowed a computer, as long as you wear dress socks.

That double would be better but it would need a compact.

Speaking of which I have to put on a compact and a 27 tonight....ugh...

I was just at the store a little while ago after doing 60 miles in Iowa County. I warned her you guys would be coming.

Michael,
Definitely go with the triple. There will be many times when 7 mph will be a fast uphill sprint. The store has just enough provisions including ice cream to keep you going.

I should get a compact for the Ti bike! No Joke

The steel bike can carry enough water to travel from SLC to Reno. ...and the fender keeps the bottles clean

This was my one-bike-for-everything up until January.
