Have Any Ridden The Black Bear Century Grayling to Oscoda?

I'd like to ask a few questions of any that have done this race/ride. Have you done this interesting little ride? Tell me about Heartbreak hill and Block and Tackle Hill, please?

I did it a few years ago and it is very flat. The only hills I remember were at mile 67 and mile 80, the other hills you see on the graph average less than 50ft per mile and are more like false flats. The hill at 67 is long and will split up many groups. the one at 80 isn't that bad but by then the legs are feeling it.

Here is the graph and my stats from the ride. Ignore the coasting time as my power meter batteries died shortly after the start.

Thanx, Fred. Where are all the fast times coming in here? There must be some good declines or steady tailwind? Sub-4hr times and sub-5's are commonplace even in the senior citizen class? That amazes me (though not to take anything away from the well conditioned seniors), is this a ride that attracts this many top-level distance riders or is there an "easy" element to this I'm missing? Riding 21-25mph avg cant be credited to pacelines can it?

I may hop in at the last minute to experience the fun that many have called this ride.

I did it the last year before they did wave starts and yes pacelines can be the reason for the fast times. This ride does attract a lot of wanna be racers and when you put them together on a flat course and it is very flat then the fast times will happen. When I did it I did it with a big very fast group that worked together. The group I was with had the top 10 riders in it. I stayed with them until just before the first hill at mile 67 and when I did get shelled out the back I had averaged over 27 MPH. I finished near the top that year to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you are a strong rider you can expect to finish with a 20+ MPH average if you do not stop. It is a fun ride if you like to go fast.

Ok, that paints a better picture for me. My "strong" wears off quickly after 60mi, though I would like to do a group century in a paceline sometime just to see what I could do. Thanx for the help, it's appreciated
