Midwest must do rides - 2013

Trying to get a list together for some rides in the area that look interesting for 2013. I just really got into cycling this year, but logged almost 4k miles, and want to do more next year. I'm in Columbus, OH, so something reasonable distance would be good.

I'm looking for organized rides, and with some distance. Last year i did TOSRV (105 miles), and plan to do it again. I did the Westerville bike club Dry Run, a smaller more local ride, but it was another century, over 4k feet of climbing, later in the year so temps were good. Also did the Tour De Cause in Lancaster, did 40 mile route last year (broke my wrist 20mi in and still finished it), 62 this year, and plan on the 100 next year. I also did Pelotonia (6200 riders, did the 100 mi route with the hillier finishing 25), but unsure if i will do again this year. fundraising was hard enough this year, so it'll depend on if my new job is willing to sponsor a team.

Other rides im looking to do.

RAIN. this would be by far my longest ride ever. hoping to drag a few local friends out and then find some groups to join in with.

theres another in southern IN called the Harvest Homecoming. my dad's cousin told me about this a couple years ago and I haven't made it, but would like to this year...looks to be some decent hills through the whole route.

the Hilly Hundred. some friends did it this year, i couldnt make it due to starting a new job just before and no time off. if i recall correctly, its 100 miles over 2 days, but a lot of climbing, so i'd count that.

So what are some other good ones i can look into? OH/IN/MI/KY type area.

Hilly Hundred is great, also the Sweet Corn Challenge in the Cleveland area is good. One Hell of a Ride in Chelsea Mi. put on by the Ann Arbor bike club is good.Plus the Mad Anthony River Ride in the Toledo area is good as well.

Two that I've done:

pumpkinvine.org/PBR - Shipshewana (east of South Bend), Indiana in Amish country. Next one is on Saturday, June 15, 2013; proceeds benefit the trail; about 1000 riders. 14th year, well organized, plenty of local tourism and shopping activities for non-riders.

The Apple Cider Century - Three Oaks (in the very SW corner of), Michigan. Next one is on Sunday, September 29, 2013; over 5000 riders. 40th year, very well organized.

Enjoy the ride!

I did the Dayton Cycle Club's Covered Bridge Tour a few years ago. It's only $5.00 and is a no-frills ride. I liked it.
ROUTES: 23 miles (2 covered bridges), 45 miles (5 covered bridges), 74 miles (7 covered bridges), 105 miles (11 covered bridges). Rolling to hilly terrain. Route direction arrows are marked (painted on roads) at intersections.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want to do this ride next year: Red River Rally near Slade KY. Hosted by the Bluegrass Cycling Club in Lexington, KY. Local riders have liked their Horsey Hundred ride, too.
Here's a 2012 Red River Rally gps recording of the Sunday 65 mile route. Click the Terrain option on the Map pulldown at the top right of the page, then zoom all the way in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Solo rides:

The Little Miami Bike Trail isn't busy at all, except for 5 miles near the Loveland and Xenia stops. The best section is from Spring Valley to Loveland. The trail south from Loveland to Cincinnati is scenic, but can be crowded, and bumpy from tree roots under the trail.

Here's a ridewithgps map: 84 miles from Xenia to Loveland and back. Or start at Spring Valley for 70 miles, or Corwin for 60 miles.

You will need to slow down near rest stops if there are walkers or kid bikes on the trail. Otherwise, it's full speed ahead and few road crossings.

near Corwin:

I'll be signing up for Pelotonia this year. I was a photog for them the first year, but they kind of screwed me. I worked 5 shifts and shot over 4500 images, some of them were fantastic, and when it came time to upload them it turned out that they only used pics from a couple friends of the PR manager. I had nothing to do with them the next two years. THIS year, I've got a more personal reason to ride. My wife was just diagnosed with cancer and while I know any money I raise will not really help her situation, it will help others later on down the road.

really fun ride. there are people at EVERY intersection directing traffic. there are support riders who ride the route to assist if you have problems. there are people playing music along the routes. concert after the ride at the summer fest grounds.
there are 5-12-25 mile rides.
25-50-75 mile ride with riding over the hoan bridge.

I'm new to biking as well but plan on doing the Tour De Troit this year. Probably only going to do the 25 mile casual ride myself, but a metric century is also available. Looks like they had over 5000 riders last year.

^ cool vid. "20+ miles of groomed ST"----how is ST groomed?...particularly the banked turns. With some homemade contraption towed behind a snowmobile?

And does everyone ride Pugsleys/Mukluks/Moonlanders? Or do some use studs?

If you're going to do the metric you need to sign up early! I missed out this year.

I'll second the Hilly Hundred; it's a very well organized and run event. To get the full benefit of the Hilly, stop at every food stop, sit on the grass, and enjoy the live music. I think the Hilly is best enjoyed by spending both Friday and Saturday nights on campus. Be sure to attend the show, at least your first year.

I rode the Harvest Homecoming several years ago, and it's a beautiful ride. It's not a human spectacle like the hilly but IIRC the hills are a bit more challenging.

The draw of RAIN is not only the length - a PR for many cyclists - but the volunteer support along the way. Since it's pretty much flat, pacelines can stay together all day if that's your cup of tea.

Another Indiana ride that offers a unique experience is the Tour de Cure held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If you're a race fan at all, you don't want to pass up the opportunity to ride around the track. If you want to set a PR for 100 miles, this is the place.

good pacelines for RAIN would be nice. the one thing that annoyed me a bit on my first TOSRV (2012) was in parts, we'd have good pacelines, 23-24 no problem, but the last 30 miles, we got in with a group (who ironically, i ride with a lot now), and it was a constant yo-yo. drove us insane. about 5-7 miles out they stopped for a minute, and we decided to just finish it and not deal with the yo-yo anymore.

Good challenging rides--but ride them on other dates. The routes (pdf & mapmyride) are on their respective websites.

The organizers & sponsors lost their minds when they saw the success of the [now lottery only] HHH.
The Triple Crown Challenge is more a challenge of how much $ they can make. $260+fees is the cheapest you can get away with for the Triple.

My hometown century, the Hancock Horizontal Hundred....

https://www.hancockhorizontalhundred.com/ (Still last years website)

It's a nice ride, we do really have some decent scenery up here if you know where to look. This is one of the oldest organized rides in the country.

This is a local ride for me, this year being it's third. It is an excellent ride with variable terrain, great support, clean routes, well marked, etc, etc. I generally don't repeat a lot of rides, but this is a fun ride.

Back when I was attending Ohio State, the OSU bike club started it's own TGRR (The Great Reservoir Ride) that hit most of the reservoirs north of the city... MOC Mid-Ohio Century was in the Delaware area. Of course I did TOSRV several times (which is/was 210 miles in two days) We also went over and did Hilly Hundred in Bloomington, IN...

This my be a good place to find out about more rides... https://ohiocycling.info/obec if the website gets updated for this next year...

*Ahem* The original Tour de Donut in Staunton IL, 2013 will be the 25th year. The last few years or so have seen over a thousand riders in this event. You can follow the news at https://www.bebikeclub.com/tourdedonut/, and you can also look up the "I survived the Tour de Donut" Facebook page. And if you're going to come that far, you might as well enjoy some excellent rural IL cycling before/after.
More fun than one person should have in a day - so it gets spread all around!
Cheers!
