Chicago Winter Bike Swap meet - Jan. 18th 2014

Anyone going or have gone before?

I have a history in swap meets, but only for the fast, 4 wheeled kind. This would be my first foray into a bike swap meet, and want to see if anyone else is going and what to expect.

I am looking for some odds and ends, and a new roadie this season. However the roadie moneys are coming from a work bonus I won't see for another month. But who else is going?

A bunch of local folks are going. Bibliobob and a couple other people will have tables. I'll be tossing a few bits on one of them. The same crowd (more-or-less) will be in Madison the following weekend.

Is it a good mixture of new and old parts? One thing I am on the lookout for is a front light or 2 and another rear since I want both bikes (when I get them) to have them.

I'm mostly into the vintage stuff and I've only been to this swap one time, but ISTR some shops with stands there. You can find pretty much anything I think. Even if you don't wind up getting the lights you're looking for it's a fun way to geek out about bikes.

I've been a few times in past years when I was getting started riding again and found it worth going to. It reminds me a lot of the motorcycle show with all these adults wandering around looking like little kids waiting for better weather when they can go out and play. Psimet and his wheels will be there too.

I have been, and will try to be there (work schedule permitting) again. Its worth the trip, IMO.
I am mostly into commuting stuff's and some odds and ends that I find worth having.

I am still kicking myself for passing on a Bike Friday NWT folder for $450 at last year's event. I hesitated a little, then it was gone on my second pass.
I'll try to be more prepared this time.

I haven't been at the Madison swap. I've heard it is bigger?

Yes, apparently much bigger. John Barron on CR said he thought it was only second to a swap in Denver.
