Pedestrians in downtown Chicago

Do you ever say anything to those pedestrians who like to crowd the bike lanes waiting for their signal to cross, or the ones who cross against the signal without checking for oncoming bikes when the traffic is clear? Seems like every morning I have to swerve around someone who steps into the lane ten feet ahead of me, or I have to stop (when I have the green bike light even) while ten people stand there like idiots in the lane. I try my hardest to ignore them but they drive me crazy. I feel like I'm going to get a brain aneurysm from holding it inside.

It's so not worth getting your blood up about it. I ride in the loop and have to deal with it too. If you want, get a bell, whistle, horn, etc. and try to clear the path, but I wouldn't count on it. Look at pedestrians like cows. Slow, dull-witted, they ain't gonna jump out of your way, and you don't want to crash into one. Give them a wide berth and just accept it as part of city traffic.

Bear in mind that drivers often have an irrational hatred of cyclists because of almost the same reasons that you get agitated at pedestrians. Nobody likes being slowed down, but don't get a sense of entitlement about it.

Today I was in Old Town on Wells Street. This was a visit for me. I watched cyclist after cyclist just blow by the stop sign. Not even riders on those city blue rental bikes do a stop with a foot down. Just amazing!!

I stopped by the Village Cycle Center on Wells. Quite a store, claiming to be the largest bike shop in North America with its three floors.

VCC is a great place, bought 2 bikes there because of their service in the last few months.

As for Chicago peds, similar to the treat them like cows approach. Unless you are on the lake front path, then you need to be aware of the wolves in cow hides. I have seen and dealt with enough numb-skulls up there over the last few years I don't even ride that trail anymore. I'd rather deal with the oblivious peds at street crossings than the crazies that will roam on the lake front.

The trick to cycling Chicago's lakefront is to stay south of Soldier Field/McCormick place.

I got met with a few in the loop yesterday. I usually just blow by them but if they're being especially ignorant I just tell them to "get out of the ****ing bike lane"
