I have a black kickstand on the rear of my Trek 7.2 FX and use it all the time. So much nicer than having to lay the bike down on the ground or find something to lay it against every time you stop. If you feel you'll have a need for a kickstand, I say definitely get one.

I quit using kick stands years ago. One instance I hit a pot hole and the stand went in the down position and started scraping the cement. Another time I was pedaling on a good run when my foot smacked the stand and it went in the down position again----to me they are unsafe and could end up getting you hurt or damaging your bike.

I like kick stands so much I have 2 on my bike (a double legged kickstand). This makes it much more stable. Particularly when my purse and groceries are in the front basket.

Now, to put a little icing on the cake. Add one of those little rubber boots to the tip of the kickstand and it further stabilizes the bike especially on soft ground. Another tip.....buy a kickstand too long for your bike and incrementally reduce the length until you get it right at the sweet spot. If you ride with loads, adjust your kick stand with the bike loaded.
With all this love I am hearing for the humble kick stand, it has renewed my faith in humanity.

I like having a kickstand. It makes it easier for me to stop and enjoy the surrounding views without having to search for an area to set the bike or to drop it on the ground. I find not having a kickstand annoying. Along with the idea that I'm not a true biker if I have a kickstand. My last bike didn't have a kickstand and that was a pain.

I'm looking forward to picking up an upstand or two.
I've just bought so many accessories and it seems like the list is endless so I've put that on hold for now.

Yeah, I think it's a great design overall. There are some critical reviews, saying it's not "robust" enough (I guess kickstands are like women in this way, some prefer a more "robust" vs skinnier figure ).
I'll probably pick up a couple eventually.

Anywhere I roam
The kickstand is my favorite accessory on my bike.......it is handy, handy, handy and weighs less than a water bottle. Those who don't have one are uncool bordering on stupid. Kickstand users unit and ward off the racing mentality induced by manufacturers who have riders bedecked as peddling billboards. Talk about being brainwashed.

Nothing wrong with kick stands, or mirrors, or coffee mug holders. Add as much or as little as you like. Just ride... and enjoy.

My best Seinfeld voice.. "So What's The Deal With Kickstands?"
I am 45 year old male and this is my first bike purchase since I was 19 so I was away from "The Bike Game" for awhile. Back in the 80's kickstands were very convenient if you were lucky enough to have a bike with one.
Now, I notice that a lot of riders do not install one. Is it because they are not "cool" to have one or is it the ole saving weight = hardcore rider = faster rider thingy?
I was at a Specialized dealer the other day and was looking at a done up Crosstrail with full fenders, bike rack, saddle bags and kickstand. I was playing with the kickstand and noticed how smooth, sturdy, light and solid it was compared to the last time I flicked up a kickstand back in 1986.haha
They were tanks back then that felt like you were kicking up a motorcycle kickstand.lol
Yes the Crosstrail was super silent, light and effortless and it was positioned at the rear of the bike so it was out of the way with your pedal stroke. Back in the 80's some of my friends would take off their kickstands because they would always come loose (poor fastenings back then) and get in the way of your pedal stroke.
I know you can always lean your bike up against something but I would be concerned with the bike dropping and scratching up my paint or other damage.
Also back in the 80's we would lay our bmx bikes upside down if we had no kickstand.lol
Will I be shunned by the "cool" bike crowd if I was to install a kickstand on my Coda Elite? Will they pelt rocks at me? LOL

No way and definetly to the contrary, at least to those in the know .... stands are actually the "new cool".

I just bought a 2015 Giant Roam 1. Glad that I read this forum and the light weight/large wheel factor resulting in the tipping effect. Thx everyone.
Newbie question: Dare I ask what a 'Dork Disc' is ?

Plastic protector around the spokes just behind the rear wheel gear cogs. Adds a few grams of rotational weight, clear plastic looks cheap, but if your derailleur is poorly adjusted - will save you from some damage when the chain slips off. My nice Trek DS did not come with one, since it is not marketed for Dorks

Hi Caper,
i haven't had my Giant Roam 1 very long, but first thing I did was put a kick stand on it. Haven't had any problems so far, but again, have only had the bike for a very short time. Maybe a rear kickstand like in the post above might work for you?

And look at that! Giant also has an integrated rear kick stand mount!
Seek / Roam XR Kickstand (Kickstands and Storage) - Bike Gear | Giant Bicycles | Canada
(No idea if this will actually fit your specific model, check if you have the two mounting holes.)

I'm just tired of marred saddles, and the bike tilting unexpectedly when I try to prop it against something.

I use kickstands all the time. My utility bike actually has both a chainstay mounted stand and a double footed centre stand, each to be used as appropriate. The double foot stand takes some of the juggling out of loading panniers or strapping whatever down on rack or loading the little guy on the tag along bike - he is just not quite sure just yet about climbing on himself - he likes to be lifted on.
A bike will be much more stable on any stand if you can keep the front wheel from flopping to one side or the other. Sometime I just park the bike so there is a rock or bench keeping the wheel from steering - sometimes I use the lock or cable to take the flop out of the system. There are devices to be had which accomplish as much. Yuba's is called a "deflopliator". Sometimes a simple velro strap does the trick.

On my Trek frame based tourer I put together about 30 years ago ... at the time, I got a cool bike accessory called the Blackburn Stop Block. I stll have it on my bike. It is a very small stepped rubbery/plastic wedge that inserts into brake lever hinge area and prevents your front wheel from rolling when you lean your bike against something.
Such a simple idea but it works effectively. It appears that they're not sold anymore? Quick search and this is what the brake stop looks like ....

Or go au natural ....
Bike Parking Brake: 100% Natural - BikeHacks
Jeez, being newbie to this forum, if one has patience, one can find similar discussions with a different spin on topic. Just found this ....
https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/21...ing-brake.html
I have already caved-in to reflectors & of course removable LED lights for night riding safety, is understandable. Also somewhat surrendered to randomly wearing (not all the time) cycling helmet. The dork spoke protector pie disc, I absolutely rejected them many, many years ago! As for fenders, they do have a nerdy aspect to them but I have not yet ridden in heavy rain. Perhaps wearing lightweight rain clothing gear might be my alternative to fenders. Finally ... you will have to water-board me first to force me to put kickstands on my bikes!
