Another specialized crosstrail comp dilemma
Ok, I need some advice.
I'm thinking about plunging in for a specialized Crosstrail Comp Disc 2016 bike. I did see a 2015 model heavily discounted on the net and when I approached my LBS they said they'd match it but it would be 2016 model. Sounds a no-brainer.
Now, I really don't know enough about the components on the bike to know if they're any good or not compared to a cheaper bike. What I do know is that the bikes are light and if i'm spending this money on a bike its certainly better than going to my LBS with £200 in my pocket.
My existing bike is a 2010 Giant Roam XR1 which has been absolutely fantastic. I've done 80 odd miles in a single day on with luggage across wales and it is amazing. The crankset is a three ring that has enabled me to get up all the hills I've tried but the Specialized is only a 2 ring and I'm a bit worried if the low gear will be as low.
I'm also interested in how high the top gear will be. I've done 47 mph on the Giant (downhill obvs) and I need to be sure that it will be just as fast as the Giant.
The only reason I'm changing from the Giant is because it's started to feel sluggish half way through a ride. I really feel like I'm having to exert extra energy. Now by the time I change stuff just to find out I may well have spent £200 before finding out it's me getting old. Front wheel bearings have never been changed. Rear has only last year and crank 'cups' done earlier this year. New cassette and chain this year too. All derailleurs are original. Hydraulic rim brakes have been superb too. I reckon I could still get £200 for this bike on ebay. I paid £850 which is £100 more than the Specialized is going to cost me.
I don't use clip-in pedals and have never felt the need. I do use toe clips just so my feet don't slip forward and off. Again, if it aint broke.....
I regularly use my bike to go to work (56 miles round trip Crosby to Warrington) which is mostly on a rough 'cycle path' adjacent to the A580 which needs my suspension 'on' for some sections. I do a C2C every year too which involves some off-road trails and regularly cycle the Wirral way so I don't think I want to get into a road bike. Just not that interested in 'racing' or trying to look like a professional.
Does anybody think the Specialized will disappoint me when compared to the Giant?
Many thanks for reading

From a quick look at the specs 2015 (Specialized Crosstrail Comp Disc 2015 Hybrid Bike | Evans Cycles) vs 2016 (Specialized Bicycle Components), there isn't much difference, the FD has been changed, but would see this as the XT on the 2015 model is no longer produced in a 10 speed version. Would have a look at this thread on BF about the differences, although it doesn't not much more https://www.bikeforums.net/hybrid-bic...p-changes.html
For the differences between your current Road and the Crosstrail-Comp-Disc, the brakes are the biggest, although if you don't ride in the wet, this isn't an issue, from the issues you not you have had, the crank cups (the Bottom Bracket) if you have got 5 years out of it, you have done well, although it's an easy thing to replace, and should cost no more than £30, although you can get the parts and tools for the same. The gearing will be a big difference, not quite sure that is on the Giant, but it looks like it has a 48t largest, with the Crosstrail-Comp-Disc having a 44t, this could be noticeable.
Would initially be looking at what is making the Roam feel off, what condition is the fork in? these (SR Suntour) are normally disposable, even at this price point, do you really need it? this type of bike is starting to veer off the use of suspension forks, as they just add weight, and bigger tires can do the same job for less cost, complication and weight, the bike does look like a great starting point if it's still in basic good condition.
If you are looking to change, and are looking at cost, would be looking at something like a Planet X London Road, as these can offer a lot better VFM than the big brands.

You have me concerned now. I don't want to find myself 'all-out' in top gear needing another gear. It has happened before when I had a cheap 'British eagle' £200 in 2000. It's why I eventually upgraded to the Giant.
My alternative choice would be a Giant Fastroad SLR. Gearing on this looks a bit better (I think???). If I got this I could use it for my long rides and keep the Giant Roam XR1 for more off-roady/track rides. Find out what the problems are with it though.

The biggest recent crosstrail comp disadvantage to some, according to my LBS, is that its not geared to go road bike fast. I'm not riding a hybrid that fast so its a don't care for me. Dunno how that compares to your giants gearing, my head hurts too much to do the math. You may be able to go to more gear by swapping components. The granny gear is workable if you are in shape. That being said, the comp feels like its pedaling itself. The light weight makes a big difference on the hills.
Given your expectation, I'd suggest riding the crosstrail and see if the gears will limit you.

I feel ya bro....
I went through this same process for several months.
I compared specs and test road many bikes from all the major manufacturers.
I just pulled the trigger so to speak and ordered a 2016 comp disc.
I found that fussing over details that had no real impact on my cycling satisfaction was an exercise
that was often frustrating, but it's a process I need to go through before making a major purchase.
The only suggestion I can make is that you choose the bike that fits and feels best....
Seriously, IMHO saving a few bucks or giving too much weight to components is not going to offset being uncomfortable

Ok, I've only gone and bought a Giant Fastroad SLR
FastRoad SLR (2015) | Giant bicycles / Giant bikes UK | United Kingdom
Pretty good discount. This thing better be fast or I'll be gutted. Never bought a bike before that I thought looked really special. Although I did buy a gold BMW once. I think that might tell you something.
No suspension, but I've saved £100 over the Specialized and I'll use it to get the Roam sorted out.

Beautiful bike.
I think that since you already have a suspension hybrid, this move makes a lot of sense.
Enjoy!

Unfortunately my order was cancelled. I cannot find a Fastroad SLR in ML size anywhere on the net. Some will let you order it but it appears Giant have none left in stock.
Unless.....anybody knows of one?

ML in stock at time of posting
Not too surprised stock is running low on 2015 models, as we are in the 2016 model year now.

Yes I tried there. Apparently when they get round to it they will update their website to reflect they have none. :-(
It's obvious now is the perfect time to get a bargain then. £200 off new 2015 bikes without trying hard

There isn't a big enough difference between the Giant and Specialized bike that you'll magically start feeling better after an 80 mile ride on the new Specialized bike.
Consider getting a whole new class of bike such as a Road bike or a Cyclocross bike, especially if you're doing longer rides. Keep the hybrid for commuting if you wish, although you do have a fairly long commute.
Also consider the new Cannondale Slate, available soon, although it is likely a bit higher cost of a bike.

I chose a GT Eightball because I wanted an IGH bike with disk brakes and while billed as an urban bike, it seemed to be built tough for riding on hardpack and gravel paths by upgrading the tires.
And it was within my budget.

It isn't the bike that is getting sluggish mid-ride.

PS, had to get a Giant Allroad 2. Picking up this afternoon. :-)

Thats a nice bike, I missed it when searching months ago. Pretty much all I saw in IGH with discs was custom, the Cannondale Bad Boy 1 ($1800), or the Giant Seek 1 ($1100) that no LBS stocks in this area. I really wanted the 11 speed IGH, however.

That was my point, I have cycled 80 odd miles to Dolgellau before and felt 'ok' when I got there. Tired obvs. So why am I knackered doing 25 miles Crosby to Warrington. Bike feels like it's slowing me down. If I stop pedalling completely it comes to a halt way sooner than I would expect or remember it doing so. The new bike won't have suspension so will be lighter soI will hope it is much better or I have wasted my money.

1. Given what you describe, the problem must be in your wheels -- hub bearings shot? The only other possible thing would be brakes dragging.
2. Giant Allroad 2? D'you mean 'Anyroad' w/drop bars, or ... ?

1. Hopefully. I will try and replace these myself. I have a big hammer at home. What could go wrong.
2. Whoops. Yes that's exactly what I meant. Same frame and many components as the Fastroad I think. First bike with drop handlebars and clip-ins. I refuse to go the whole hog though and have bought Muddy Fox shoes today though. My mates wanted me to get Shimano, but I don't want to conform (too much).

I felt a Shimano Alfine 8 speed IGH hub for $900 was too good deal to pass up! Retail is $1180. So I got a nice bike and the only things I have to change on it are peripheral (like saddle, bars, grips) components which I was going to do any way.
