Trek 7.1 Used vs Giant Escape 3 2016 New

Hi All! So, I am looking to get some assistance with a buying decision I have right now. I am looking to buy a bike to commute to work (around 4 miles round trip) and also ride the bike on bike trails (pavement/road). I have narrowed my search to two bikes. I can either get a Trek FX 7.1 used that I found on eBay. It will cost $289 total and it looks like it is in excellent condition. The other choice is to buy a giant escape 3 2016 new from my LBS for around $360+tax. I don't know which one I should go for. Is there a clear winner? Is there another bike that I should be looking at? Thanks for any help in advance!

Go with the Escape.

I would be reluctant to buy any bike from ebay, unless I could inspect it and in person.

As for your third question, there are hundreds of bikes, new and used, that would be better than the Escape 3 and the FX 7.1. It all depends on your budget and the time you have to winnow through the choices. If your budget is limited to $400 or less, the Escape is probably the cheapest new bike shop quality bike out there.

Hey, thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in responding. But, I have since done a little more research and, came across two things. First, I found a Giant Escape 2 2015 edition at my local bike store that I am able to just get with my budget. Brand new and comes from reputable business. The other thing I came across was another Trek Bike but this time a Trek FX 7.2 2014 edition on Craigslist. This one caught my interest because it looks really good in the pictures and also comes with a year warranty from a bike store about 30 minutes from me. The trek FX bike is $300 and the Giant Escape 2 is $420+tax (so about $450 all said and done) new. Does this change the equation at all? Thanks so much for your help!

Really a horse a piece. The FX 7.2 and the Escape 2 are direct competitors in a crowded field of $450 to $500 bikes. Both bikes are built to a price point, but sensibly so. Both have triple chainrings, 8 speed shifters, inexpensive but reliable V brakes. Try them both out and buy whichever speaks to you. If equal in your eyes, go with the Giant if you like the piece of mind of having a warranty. Go with the Trek if you can do your own maintenance and want to save a few bucks.

Either one should be more than adequate for a 4 mile commute.
