Seeking Advice on Entry Level Bike

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a hybrid bike. Most of my riding will be on urban roads or bike trails with perhaps 15 - 20% of my riding on dirt paths or packed gravel paths. I haven't cycled long distances in a while but I plan on working my way up to cycling about 7 miles to work 2 - 3 times a week (14 miles there and back) with 1 or 2 other days with shorter distances or to take out to the park with my family.

I'd like to use the bike to commute, for fitness and leisure.

My budget is tight and I'm looking to spend less than $600 (with tax - in Canada that's 13%).

Here are two bikes that I'm considering:

Raleigh Misceo 1.0 (2015): Raleigh Bicycles - 2015 Misceo 1.0

It would cost me $524 (no tax).

Or

Giant Roam 3 (2015): Roam 3 (2015) | Giant Bicycles | United States

It would cost $568 (with tax)

It has front suspension. I'm not sure if I need that or if it would slow me down on my commute.

Is one of these bikes better generally? Is one better for my purposes? Is one more reliable or more enjoyable to ride?
Would one require more maintenance?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Between the two, I'd choose the Giant. I just personally like Giant. It may also be a good idea to check out craigslist. The reason I say this is, if you are new to cycling you may want to save a few bucks to test the water with a used bike. I just picked up a 2015 Trek 7.3 for $290 in mint condition. If you are mechanically inclined then you could go through it top to bottom with very little effort. Just a thought.

Are you able to demo both and choose which one feels the best when you ride it?

You asked about the suspension fork. I do not like suspension on maintained surfaces such as paved and gravel roads. I don't like the bouncy front end when I stand and pedal on those surfaces, and I don't like how the bushings in low-end forks wear out so quickly -- leading to stanchion wobble. Also consider that money the brand spends on a suspension fork is money that must be "taken" from other parts on the bike. OTOH, some people do prefer suspension. I can't make that call for you. All I can do is to share my own, personal preference.

The Roam 3 should be on sale for $460 right now.

Roam 3 (2015) | Giant Bicycles | United States

FWIW, I have a 2011 Roam 2 and love it. It's my "go to" bike out of four bikes.

Thanks for the reply.

I suppose riding both bicycles to see how they feel is probably the most important thing. I am worried about maintenance or even replacement of the fork later on. Something for me to consider.
