It would be nice to see a geometry chart om the Detroit Bikes and Brooklyn, especially since you will not be able to demo it. If you know your size I like these made in the USA bikes a lot and you definitely will not see anyone else riding the same bike in Hawaii.
The Masi you linked is a nice bike but it has a drop bar. If you don't mind drop bars on a wide tire bike it opens you up to a lot of other possibilities.
Kona made the Big Rove a few years ago that you can still get at Kona Big Rove Bike 2015 > Bikes > Commuter & Urban Bikes | Jenson USA and shipped. They still make it in aluminum so if you have a dealer nearby you can test one out.

Any 9since you are just asking a casual question, any hand made steel, 700c wheel , wider tire capacity ,
like 35 wide can be set up with flat bars..
and thus be a "Hybrid".. you can even use a Road bike if narrow tires are good enough..

... there's more to it than just slapping on flat bars .
Geometry will determine degree of upright position .
From photos and specs conversion Salsa Vaya looks like it could work for me .

Great! now Go test ride more Bikes its a crowded Market place and Taiwan is where most are made these days ..
