I Need Help Choosing A Bike
Hello. I am not too experienced with bicycles. I have a few questions on what kind of bike I should get. I live in New York City. I need a bike to commute to work, exercise and some recreational riding. I need a bike that is ideal for pavement, light trails, some gravel (possibly) and urban riding. I would need a bike that will be able to conquer pot holes and curbs as well as some light trails in Central Park. Does anyone know what kind of bike would suit me best, but will not break the bank? I would like to spend at most around $500. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

If you plan on using your bike for commuting check and see if you can park it inside. If not a good lock or maybe a folding bike or something along those likes might suit you.
I would probably shop used. I like the early to mid 90's rigid mountain bikes. They were heavy but pretty comfy and bomb proof. Change the tires and the can be pretty quick and agile. Except for a few models they weren't that flashy either. You can check shops that sell used bikes or craigslist. However if you don't know much about bikes I don't think craigslist is a good idea unless you have someone who does go with you.

Specialized hardrock mountain bike would be a very good choice for a nearly bombproof ride. They have a model with disc brakes that i THINK will fit in your budget, if you ride in rain. Put some low lug height tires on it and you should be good for everything.
If you want more speed, take a look at the Specialized Crosstrail. Bigger 700c tires, that are fairly wide, and a suspension fork. You are gonna want a little cushion up front for potholes and curbs.
As and end note, if you have to leave it locked outside where theft is a possibility, then I agree with exile that you should find an older less flashy mtb. Though there are some pretty good locks out there these days.

Looking For
As was posted, look at the Trek 7.3 FX. You will not go wrong with this bike. Get the 24 speed for all types of riding. It comes with all Bontrager and Shimano and you can get liots of add ons to make it into a bike that will fit your life style. Hope that helps.
