I used to participate in a local MTB race that was attached to a cyclocross meeting. I learnt a lot on how to set up and ride the MTB in mud.
Narrow tyres will bite through the mud to the firm surface below and give you grip, But you stay away from the "Firm" mud that will get between the frame and Tyres and act as the best drag brake you have ever had. Run though the sloppy stuff and it runs off the bike.
I was loaned a cyclocross for a lap to see what they ride like but they were not for me- but those narrow tyres and gearing of the cyclocross are perfect for the conditions in the slide show. So I would not be surprised to find out that some of those bikes were not cyclocross bikes modified for the conditions.
Edit And only on the conditions of the ride. After going through the pics- The Mud could not have been too bad The clean "Tandem" is from this ride. The second is me and my Co- rider after 65 miles of a 100 mile offroad event. We had earlier been running though Gloopy mud up to the wheel axles and we had already washed the bike about 5 miles beforehand. We did abandon on this one shortly afterwards though.
