City Bike Made In America... Browery Lane
City Bike made of steel in New York City... yes, its made in America. Did I mention its priced right? ;):innocent::D
http://www.bowerylanebicycles.com http://bowerylanebicycles.com/images..._bike_w_bg.png One speed only and as Henry Ford once said, you can have any color as long as its in black! That's a back to the basics hybrid! |
I'm sold. You can fit two six packs in the box and it comes with an over-sized bell...:D
|
Looks sort of like a Schwinn Racer. What's new is old. Here's the Speedster version with a 3 speed hub.

I realize the word "hybrid" no longer has a definition or meaning on this forum any longer, but to call that thing a hybrid is ridiculous.
|
A hybrid can be any bike that's not a road bike or MTB. The city bike is the forerunner of modern hybrids. People want a bike for comfort as well as for day to day fun. The Bowery line fits that test. I realize it may not be what you want but no one is forcing you to buy it!
|
The Globe Live is priced twice as much as the one discussed on this thread. If I had to do it all over again, I'd keep some dough in my pocket and buy American!

It's not a hybrid. |
How you can call it "priced right" also defies logic. It looks more like a beach-cruiser than a relative of the hybrid.
|
City bikes are NOT beach cruisers. They are practical means of transportation for daily errands as well as fun. The picture of the bike shown shares the geometry of a hybrid and the design that makes them such an inviting alternative to road bikes and MTBs. Don't knock a city bike until you've taken a test ride on one.
|
Price is too high for a basic single speed bicycle with a coaster brake.
|
Modern hybrids have sloping top tubes, multiple gears, and flat bars... unless I get a hold of them.
This bike has a relaxed geometry with a level top tube, porteur bars, chain case, fenders, and a one speed drive and fits the design parameters of a city bike. Consider that a number of imported bicycles of very similar design sell for $800.00 and up and the fact this bike is hand built in the US and costs $600.00 and the price does not look too bad... and that price also appears to include shipping anywhere in the U.S. |

yea the Globe Live is expensive even compared to the Trek Belleville which I'm holding out for. The bike you posted is nice but I dont live in the States anymore and can imagine that even if they would ship to Canada it would be expensive |

The city bike is a simple hybrid. There's a case to be made for keeping things simple. As Samuel Beckett was fond of saying, "less is more." In this case, what you see is what you get indeed.
|
Less in more in bicycling, but those bikes look really heavy. I see less technology, but more bike. Much more. They are the most.

The city bike was designed specifically to serve a singular purpose, which is to ridden on the street. A hybrid is a combination of two distinctly different bicycle styles amalgamated by design to provide a multitude of purposes, i.e., street and off road. It's simple enough to understand the differences. |
Some one who thought I cared too much about what was or wasn't a hybrid is now parroting the bike industry's definition of the term and sounding very closed minded to alternative definitions.
Hybrid riding is a state of mind. Still the internal dialog and just feel it, baby. |
Agreed. People have their own idea of what's a hybrid to them. For me, it can be from one speed up to multi-speed derailleurs and IGH. The truth is no one bike will suit every one. A city bike isn't a cruiser, road bike or MTB. Its a bike that holds a place in my heart for me and my very first hybrid was a 1970s Schwinn Speedster in Lemon Kool.
|
The city bike is versatile. Its beast of burden of cousin, the roadster, is still used in countries where paved streets are poor to non-existent. You can ride a city bike on dirt paths and light trails although I wouldn't take it places where a real MTB would go. People don't do that either with their hybrids. Its more a state of mind than a particular kind of bicycle.

Hybrid riding is a state of mind. Still the internal dialog and just feel it, baby. My position on this has always been that there is a marketing definition and a working definition and this will probably cause people confusion until the end of time. When most bikey people hear "hybrid" a certain type of bicycle comes to mind and I am no different... I am surrounded by them. :) I used the bike industry's definition to illustrate the differences between what is marketed as a hybrid and what is more aptly described as a city bike because they do have some significant differences. If I was selling this bike at my shop it would be listed and described as a "city bike" as calling it a hybrid would really confuse the masses. |
No, it's not you. You are the last person I would accuse of having a very limited definition of hybrid bicycle.

The fact that it's defined as a city bike is indication enough that it's not a hybrid.
