Bad Boy Solo(Lefty)

Saw one of these at a shop last weekend. Looked hawt, but not the most practical ride. Mounting a front fender will take some serious MacGuyvering. There's no eyelets, and the fork crown has no mounts or hole in the underside. On the plus side, not much worry about front wheel theft since only C'dale Lefties can use that wheel. Aero rims are nice, just hope they don't make tire mounting difficult. All-in-all I got the impression that it was the cycling equivalent of the two seater roadster.

LOL @ MacGuyvering. or, in the SNL age, it'll take some serious MacGrubering....

back on topic - that bike does look bada$$. i wish this hybrid forum had people with more experience with different model bikes so they can share their experiences... everyone on here has a trek! hehe.....

but it does look like a great bike. im loving the shadowy bike/profile pictures on the cannondale site.

Nope! I have a specialized

Cannondale bikes are real nice, just not carried by the only bike shop I tend to buy new from. The shops, around here, that carry them seem to have an elitist attitude, including having most of their inventory (bikes and otherwise) overpriced. That is nothing against Cannondale, just how it is around me. I support the little guys that don't wanna rip my wallet out of my pocket!

The bad boy line look like some super durable bikes. Pricy, though...

Cannondales' reputation has ebbed and flowed over the years. Mostly, at this point, they are regarded a over priced. I wouldn't have bought my '06 Prophet 600 if not for the fact that I got 40% off on a demo, with full warranty. The Lefty is awesome! It is under appreciated, among suspension fans, because it is perceived as proprietary and high maintenance. The high maintenance is a bad rap as it requires the same amount as any other QUALITY fork. Proprietary is sticking though as parts for discontinued models are running out and not being replenished. Generally speaking hybrid aficionados give very little respect to suspension of any type as it is perceived as an energy robbing flaw that reduces efficiency. While this is true, to a degree, a properly set up suspension robs very little efficiency and goes a long way toward making rough terrain enjoyable. Too many years of bone rattlin', kidney crunchin', tooth chatterin' biking have jaded my prospective. I gave up wanting to go real fast years ago. Enjoying the journey is under rated.

+1.

I've got suspension on my Kona Dew FS and really like it. It's a Suntour NSX fork -- fairly low on the quality scale as far as forks go, but it doesn't need to take nearly the abuse that a hardcore mtn fork will take -- for smoothing out the bumps on the road and light trails, it works extremely well. I don't think it takes anything away from the ride -- if anything, the suspension makes it much, much more comfortable. When I go up hills I have the option of reaching down and locking the fork out at the flip of a lever -- no robbing of energy at that point. In fact, I find that the suspension fork actually helps me to ride better -- if I feel the fork bobbing while accelerating on smooth roads, I adjust my gearing and cadence so that it doesn't bob anymore -- making my ride much smoother yet. Once up to speed, I can't feel any notable difference between a suspension and a rigid fork aside from the little bumps being eliminated. As far as going fast, I come primarily from a mtn bike background and find my hybrid plenty fast -- it's certainly a whole lot faster than any mtn bike I've ever ridden.

Enjoying the journey is under rated.
Agreed. I often stop or go slow along the way to enjoy the scenery and the sights. But then I generally hammer it again until I see something else worth stopping for.

No links have been posted. Here's a link to the Bad Boy with the one-legged fork:

That has the Fatty Headshock, not the Lefty. Here is a link to the one legged fork.

From what I can see, and I could be wrong(and frequently am) there are no comfort/hybrid bikes with the Lefty. I wonder why they call it the Solo when it hasn't got a Lefty? Those inscrutable Pennsylvanians!

Take a closer look at the photo (top photo of the two above posted by Luffalot) -- there's only one shock arm on each of those two bikes.

Incidentally, I was in my LBS the other day and they have the Bad Boys in stock. There's something about the look of that fork (can it even be called a "fork" now?) that just doesn't sit well with me from a design point of view. I'm sure that it rides great, and I assume that there's also a weight savings, but it just looks wrong to me. As noted above, it would be a major chore to put a fender on it.

Pretty sure both BB's the shop had were '10's. The Solo looked like the second one with the aeros and Kojacks, the other had the standard HeadShok. My '09 BBU has eyelets at the dropouts and mounts up at the crown, but the air chuck still sticks out so you'd have to drill a hole in the fender to mount it,unless you're running 26" wheels. C'dale just needs to flush the chuck with the crown and it'd be golden.

sh00k: I own/have owned BBU's,Jamis Codas,Specialized Sirruses(Sirri?) and Crosstrail,a Kona Dew Deluxe,Fuji Absolute,Marin Fairfax/Novato/Pt Reyes,Novara Buzz and Big Buzz,Trek 7200,Swobo Otis and Dixon,and a hybridfied Surly 1x1. What would you like to know?

edit: oops, forgot my Giants,Sedona DX and Seek 2.

Ok, I see it now. I was fooled by the boot at the top of the fork. As you can see, my boot is nearer the axle. That 2nd pic has no boot. Is it solid, as in no shock? FWIW, there is a fender for the Lefty.

Good luck finding it in stock though.

Shockboard won't fit the Solo. There's no hole under the crown for the plug to go into, and the adapter I've seen for HeadShoks goes around the fork legs on either side by the crown.

I was just checking the Cannondale Europe site. The Bad Boy must be very popular. The Euro's have the choice of 9 different Bad Boy versions. Some with 700C wheels stock and a few with internal gearing. A very nice selection. Read them and weep.

I wonder if the fatty solo fork is sold aftermarket, I'd love to install the fork on my '09 bad boy ultra.

I've been lusting after the Bad Boy Disc for a bit now. Wish I had the money for one.
