specialized sirrus vs trek 7.2 fx
after test riding both, my impression is that the specialized feels lighter, faster, and slightly more comfortable -- but the trek rode nearly just as well.
i think the trek LOOKS nicer and from what i've read online, the trek also seems to have slightly sturdier / better quality parts, esp. the tires. i believe the trek's tires are also wider, which i take to mean the bike would be better suited when leaving the road -- that'd be a plus for me.
the sirrus had smoother shifting than the fx, but i'm not sure if that was relative to the wear & tear of the floor models or the level of upkeep at each respective bike shop ...
does the gap alter much when stepping up to the fx 7.3 / sirrus sport? i don't mind spending the extra money.
HELP! this is my first bike purchase, and the first bike i'll be riding since i had cheap mountain bikes as a kid/adolescent. i would use primarily for commuting. what to do?

What bike fits you better with your needs? That's the one to go with. I'd go with the Specialized and have the LBS replace the aluminum fork with a carbon one for added comfort. Good luck on your first hybrid purchase!

Do not know about the Trek as I ride a Sirrius. I've converted it into a 1 x 8 and lost the stock tires and replaced them with a 32 Specialized (pro I think) for the front and a 30 Michelin in the rear. The front tire has a more aggresive tread but the bike rides quite nicely on the rail trails which is its primary purpose. My buddy has a trek hybrid that he put road bars on and seems to enjoy riding that quite a bit as well.
As to which one to buy? All things being equal buy the one that is the most comfortable to ride. Aesthetics are important but you can't ride a perception.

i noticed you said something about going off road. maybe you should look at a specialized crosstrail if you want to be able to go off road?

There is "off-road" as in dirt paths and gravel, which the 7.2 FX would be just fine on. And their is "off-road" as in bumping into odd squealing things and rocks and logs. If your main road-conditions will be pavement and dirt and gravel, the Trek 7.2 FX would serve you fine.
