New Bike advice

Hello all,

I've been shopping for a new bike for the past week. I've read up a lot of posts on this forum and going to bike shops and trying out various bikes. Ive narrowed it down to two bikes:
(i really liked the Trek verve but hated the suspention seat or twist shifter, and i really wanted to like the escape 2 but it didnt feel right)

Trek 7.2 FX ($499)
https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ness/fx/7_2_fx

and the
Specialized SIRRUS ($520)
https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...s/sirrus#specs

they both feel pretty equal. (and Both bike shops are equally inconvenient to get to)
I dont know much about components, (my previous bikes have been disposable bikes from big box stores). Their seem to be a lot of experts on this site, could someone tell me if one is better than the other component wise? And does either bike excel more at a specific thing compares to the other?

(bike is going to be used for for a not very flat/urban riding 90+% of the time)

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

The components on the Sirrus are a little better, minus the rear derailleur. And you would never notice the difference between those lower grade models anyway. Trek has the Bontrager (mystery) wheels, so we can not compare them. They do get horrible reviews though, Specialize seems to take more pride in there products, so if the bike fits you well. Go with the Sirrus I will have the 2013 limited, by the end of this month, Good BYE TREK..

As you didn't provide a link or reference to the exact Verve model, I'm taking it based on the price points of the FX and Sirrus you meant the base Verve 1- https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...hybrid/verve_1. If that seat post and shifter are the only things you don't like about the bike, ask the LBS how much it would cost to swap out for a solid seat post and a trigger shifter.

I also understand your sentiment on the Escape. I absolutely love the Escape City on paper, but the geometry just feels a bit weird to me as well.

I have the 7.2FX and love it! Not sure where the "bad reviews" on the wheels come from but bear in mind the poster is not happy with Trek but millions of bike riders are....<G> I ride 60-80 mins on generally flat, paved terrain and the bike shifts effortlessly.

For that price point you can't go wrong with either (i.e. you won't notice a difference in the components) - only you can decide which feels best for you.

Good luck and let us know what you decide....

Id go with the trek, looks better.

at this price/performance point you are not giving up much choosing one over the other.

your LBS will probably swap some components around if you ask nicely. ie. seatpost

Those two bikes are very similar and both are pretty popular on the forums and get good reviews as does the Escape. I think you would be happy with either bike. The Trek has 35c tires which are a bit wider than the 32c on the Sirrus and might give you a bit more comfortable ride on rough roads. I bet the Sirrus could take wider tires; hybrids generally have a good amount of room to accommodate wider tires. The gearing on both bikes looks very similar. The rule of purchasing bikes is that you buy the one that has the best fit. If the the fit is similar, select the one that calls out to you.

And post a pic when you get the bike!

So, the LBS that sold the SIRRUS kept being flaky.

I went back to the trek/giant dealer I tried the escape 2 then the FX the the trek again and fx again... escape shifted better, felt a little zippier uphill, was slightly lighter (though the Sirrus was even lighter, and the verve is significantly lighter than all 3), ... but still wasnt comfortable. Came home with the FX. Thanks everyone for the feedback.
