15-15.5mph on 20 mile rides depending on the wind.

Giant boulder MT bike with 1.5 slicks that weighs about 38lbs(steel framed).

I have my road bike now and will take a ride in the morning to see if I improve and by how much.

I am a big guy and in bad shape but strong and young enough to push myself up to 30miles at that pace(28yr old,5'6" 190lbs). Trying to get down to around 170 though.

My current goal is 15 MPH average, on a consistent basis. And to complete a 50 mile ride without stopping, (shopping, Etc..) not to take all day. But just a ride, with only a few rest stops, (or hill pushes) LOL I think this should be realistic in the next couple months. Richard

I am at 13MPH or so riding my 7.3 on the west side trails here in manhattan. the notorious wind is the reason why this number isn't any higher but, on the good side, it gives me a killer workout i try to ride at least 13 miles each time i go out but only ride when the weather is 60 degrees or above.

i cant wait for spring/summer to get here so i can shed these winter pounds!

Personally I just ride!

I'm really not concerned with maintaining an average speed simply because of all the variables that you can't really do anything about, like wind, the conditions of the street, the cold, or if it's wet or dry.

To me, speed is momentum, and depending on the conditions, it's how much less energy I have to expend to climb the next rise or hill without gearing down and having to expend that forward momentum that I have built up.

Typically, about 9.8 mph over the course of a ride. But I ride the streets a lot, and don't feel compelled to "hammer" my way around.

Depending on your average speed, this almost never happens.
I ride at around 21mph, so unless there is an actual 25mph constant tailwind ... it'll not be helping.

My computer registered 11.7mph average on my training ride today. That's urban bike trails and a 43 deg F temperature. I have noticed that I can gain up to 3mph average by the time the temp. hits at least 90 deg F.

I have also found that wind will reduce my avg. even though I ride a closed loop. I guess I loose more to a headwind than I gain from a tailwind. Since this is central Kansas there is almost always wind, on the other hand, being Kansas I almost have to go looking for hills.

My average guesstimate is right around 12 mph on my 7 speed fat tired beach cruiser. The one time I did keep track of it I averaged 14 mph for a 10 mile ride on some gravel, hills, and going through a town. I was pretty happy with that considering the bike isn't especially speedy.

Got the road bike and it went from 15mph(usually 20-30mi rides) to about 16 but I still haven't got the ride dialed in yet(saddle and fit) and feel there is more variables keeping me from hitting 17-18(seems windier lately).

Mostly the road bike is much more comfortable with no numbness in the feet and more hand positions. I was riding a steel framed giant MTB with slicks at around 15mph.

the terrain, not to hilly....Just wondering what the rest of you are averaging ? Richard
I thought of this old post on my ride today. WOW ! There has been a big change, I was riding a Schwinn Trailways back then, Topeak truck bag full of tools, total bike weight was around 40 pounds if I remember right. Nothing but hills... Now I live in FLAT Florida, ride a 17.5 pound bike, with 23 tires. and can double my old average number, the things we learn as we get older.

I do a sprint around our reservoir here in SoCal. It's 5 miles around. Here's my average mph stats:
[h=3]09/29/2012 11.1 mph[/h]10/04/2012 13mph
10/18/2012 15 mph
10/27/2012 15.3mph

I stopped recording my speed for a bit, as well as tapered off my mileage. I got bike on the past few days.

02/28/2013 16 mph

My thinking why I got faster, sure my engine got better, but I think the reason for the jump from 13 to 15? I changed out my tires to 700cc/28, went clipless, flipped my stem, dropped a spacer, and put on long bar ends from ergon.

Good improvement, I'm thinking of putting my old 6 degree rise back on. And after getting used to that, flipping my 125 degree over. but that might be awhile. Plus I ride heavy traffic a lot, and like being able to be a little more up right to watch traffic. But nice going.

Almost exactly my situation, the exception being I have been riding all winter, weather permitting. I do find that with all of the extra, albeit light layers I wear for winter riding, and the damn winds, I have likely been averaging more like 11-12 mph.
For me that is fine as I love being out there for my usual 12-15 mile rides, and looking forward to warmer weather.
Best regards

This is kind of a hard question to answer due to all of the variables. . . length of ride, type of ride(urban, trail, path, etc. ), wind, terrain and purpose of ride. I look at my average every now and then and will reset my trip(which resets my average) when I'm curious enough. Here's what I have found.

I ride in a mainly flat area and still a little overweight. I ride a Cannondale Quick 4 w/ 700x32 Marathon Supremes

When I commute 8 miles(one-way) to work which includes lots of stop lights I average about 15mph when checking my computer upon my arrival. I'm usually pushing myself a little as I use it for a little workout and I have to get to work on time. Even though my computer doesn't calculate when my wheel isn't spinning you have to consider the slowing down and speeding back up from a stop that drastically reduces my average. Usually when I glance at my speedo I find I cruise at around 17-18mph but with the right tail wind I have maintained 20-23 mph for long periods. I used to use the MapMyRide app and when comparing it to my cycling computer that they usually produced the simliar figures.

When I'm joy riding and go on a ride that is over 20 miles I take it easy and usually still cruise at around 15mph without strong winds. Now, if I do encounter strong winds it usually knocks me down to about 13mph.

If I'm trying to sprint for a quick workout and there isn't wind on an unobstructed bike path I can usually maintain 20 mph for as long as I can last which isn't very long, a few miles.

I guess I would say just me cruising around without really over exerting myself I cruise 15-18 mph all things considered. I'm at work right now and just walked over to my bike to check my computer. My trip hasn't been reset in 190 miles and I show an average of 14.5. I think this is pretty good considering it doesn't reflect only my street riding. You have to consider times like when I arrive at a destination and roll it into the house, work etc which also lowers the average. The 15-18 mph that I noted above is more of what I would call an "in the moment" average as that's what I usually ride at when I'm actually riding.

On a side note. I looked at my average a lot when I first got my bike last year as it helped me stay motivated to see the speeds increase. However, I try not to think about it too much anymore. I find that commuting in a car and even on a bike everyday there was this anxiety that would overcome me that made me feel like I needed to hurry home. I guess that's why they call it rush hour. You see people experiencing this everyday if you commute to work, it seems like everyone is in a hurry for no particular reason. I found that paying attention to my speed was only increasing this anxiety. I have started trying to relax more and enjoy the ride. I found when I pushed myself too much all the time that I was getting demotivated to ride because when I thought about riding I had thoughts of fatigue and anxiety. Then I thought about it, going a little slower didn't really make my commute that much longer and I was still getting a decent work out. Nowadays, I really try to take my time and smell the roses. I find I arrive to work and home happier this way. I also found that it made me a safer cyclist and that I didn't get mad when vehicles did something stupid. I'm able to brush it off a lot easier now.

PS. Sorry for going off on a tangent.

I ride 3 to 6 times a week, 3 when its below 32 in the morning, wah. brrrr, my feet are cold. 20 to 30 miles a ride, 13-14mph on windy days, 16+ on not so windy days. Rolling terrain 300-400 feet altitude difference from my starting point.
