What is your Ideal Hybrid ?
Mine would have 700 x 38 to 40c street friendly tires on it, lock out forks with at least
80mm of travel, I would like disk brakes, ( for the days off road in the mud ). A large gear range, 27 speed would not hurt my feelings, Upright riding style, suspension seat
post, comfort saddle, sealed bearings, nice 32 spoke rims, standard quality pedals, Topeak
rack, with trunk bag, large grips, cycle meter, good lighting for night riding, weigh around
35 pounds with all extras...and fit me like a glove, I like the larger frames, but do not want
to feel stretched out. And all this for under say 900.00 dollars... I'm still looking.
I guess I want it all, commute to town, road ride, ( fast is not a priority, but do not want
to peddle a MTB ), Go off road with confidence, and light touring, just a do it all in one Bike....Richard BTW, there are no wrong answers, only what you prefer.

my ideal hybrid:
light frame, not carbon, not scandium or beryllium alloys, cleanly polished welds,
angled top tube,
carbon front forks,
name brand quality wheels, welded mid-weight rims, 26" or 700c
rims for 28 - 40mm wide tires,
standard tires like Sport Contacts, Duranos, or Michelin City
32 or 36 spokes, 2.0 / 1.8 or 1.8 / 1.6 dia
upgrade "enthusiast" level saddle
decent v-brakes
three finger brake levers
all teflon-coated stainless cables
9 speed 12-28 cassette
triple 30-38-46 chain rings on forged cranks,
not that particular about shifters, want smooth, precise, fast-acting,
pinned platform pedals with nice bearings (get magnesium or titanium for the sparks?)
SRAM or KMC top-of-the-line 9-speed chain with power link,
flat bars with ergonomic grips,
sporty/ fast-reacting steering rake, relatively short wheel base,
22 - 23 lb in medium 17.5 - 18.5 size,
mount points for fenders/ racks/ lights,
metallic paint,
matching fenders and racks available for extra.
stay away from suspension because of extra weight, complexity and pogo effect
$1000 - $1300 price
Asking for too much?

My ideal hybrid is the bike I have now.
I put it together myself so I made it as I like it best.
It was just under $900 as richard stated. (not including the aerobar)
I bought most parts online, so they weren't too expensive.
Frame: ALU7005 trekking frame
Fork: Suntour CR9v suspension fork
Crank & BB: Shimano 105 triple 52-42-30
Cassette: Shimano SLX 11-28
Rear derailleur: Shimano XT
Front derailleur Shimano R443
Pedals: Shimano A530
Wheels: Rodi Blackjack T622
Tyres: Schwalbe CX Comp
Seatpost: cheap suspension post
Saddle: Selle Royal 30° athletic gel
Stem: Ritchey 30° 90mm stem (I have a bad back so I like my handlebar a bit higher)
Handlebar: FSA XC-180
Grips: Ritchey truegrips
Brakes: Shimano XT V-brake set
Shifters: SRAM Attack 3x9 gripshifts
Bar-ends: Ritchey Pro
Aerobar: Profile design Jammer GT
With this bike I go fast on the roads and I am able to do tricky trails through the forests
