I almost forgot - back in about 1961, I did 50 MPH on a Schwinn American (middleweight SS)..... Of course it was on the downhill side of a tollway overpass, with a 2 1/2HP Briggs driving the back wheel........ LOL --- clocked on that old rubber hose radar by a county Cop.....

Did you know that one of those little bottle generators can drive 3 headlights, and three taillights, at that speed (anything over 35) ------ REALLY BRIGHT! Occasionally burning out all of the bulbs! I used to carry a small cloth bag full of new bulbs......... LOL

I never really said that I could not slow down safely, just never braked at that speed, and was only a 100 more feet before
reaching the bottom. So just holding on seemed more logical, and I might have over exaggerated about the bike feeling unstable,
that was when I just started riding narrow tires, and thoughts of crashing started going through my mind as I was getting closer to the bottom...I have tried to reach that same speed on that hill again, but have not managed it, need perfect conditions I guess . But
went out and bought a helmet that night and have been wearing one every since....Richard : )

I think the fastest I've ever done is 29mph. The bike was fine, solid as a rock and steady, but mentally I wasn't comfortable with it. Its funny how as a kid I would try to go as fast as I could and never wore a helmet. Slammed into a pole once and went to the hospital, lol. That probably put some permanent fear in me.

I know I've done over 45mph (I guess about 47-48) on a very slightly bumpy downhill. At that speed though with the bumps and speed I didn't care to look at my speedo very closely as if I had I'd have ended up looking a lot more closely at the ground and probably some broken teeth. When I did finally come to a stop I was swearing at myself. Earlier in the day I'd been spinning up my rear wheel checking the balance and my cycle-comp held the max for that which was about 57mph (I'm pretty sure I didn't clock that while actually riding). My holy grail is 70mph (UK Motorway Speed Limit) but I very much doubt I'll ever get there even on a road bike because approaching 50 is scary enough. If I ever did, my shorts would be a right off even if I managed to stay on my bike (if you know what I mean).

I've gone close to 40 mph on my old Pantera down a mountain. Coasting all the way and keeping check of my speed due to many bends in the road; a friend I was with was going around 44 in front of me (you can see his Rog lying by the road)...

On my "new" Chonos the current top speed is 30 mph, again coasting downhill without pedaling. I've yet to try it out on a really big hill though.

I do 35-40 on my Sirrus on almost a daily basis. I've never felt like it's unstable at those speeds although I am very careful about being able to stop when I need to. I tried the same hill on my friend's Globe and it was scary.

I can get to 38mph on a long descent on a road. I'd like to break the 40mph barrier but right at 38 I start feeling uncomfortable going that fast and start bleeding off speed. There is a stop sign at a T intersection at the bottom which doesnt help the comfort level. I should do it sometime with the computer covered and see if I can break 40 not watching for it.

My goal for bike riding these days is to be able to poke along and smell the roses. I should put a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back of my bikes cuz I really do go that slow. Going fast on two wheels is exhilerating but I always think about jumping out of a moving car going 35 mph and sure, the helmet might keep broken spokes from going into my skull but now that I'm in my late 50's I don't heal as fast as I used to. Blood is one of those body fluids that I like to keep inside me and not on the pavement. Now, on my Catrike recumbant that is a whole other story. I've had it up in the forties many a time and being 16 inches off the ground and basically lying on my back makes it feel twice as fast. I'm on three wheels with that trike though, it has very high end components, and is stable as a brick at speed.
Sometimes we do stupid things just because we must. Take it from me, I'm an expert and have developed stupidity to an art form.

Your going too fast when you get pulled over for speeding.
