Need help with a rear rack application.

Well I had my first bike in 20 years stolen in less than 10 days. I could not get the same model until at least March 2011, so I went and ordered a 2010 Cannondale Quick 3. This bike has carbon seat stays. Well I had already ordered, but not rec'd yet a Tubus Logo rear rack. The bike I ordered will not be in till next week, but looking at photos I cannot see rack mounts on the seat stays, also not sure where it would mount on the lower side. Can anybody tell me if this rack can be used with the carbon fiber seat stays. Is there adapters I have to order?

Hope I have not messed up here too bad.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!!!

    RIP 2010 Quick CX Ultra

OH NO DARIN! Bummer, that was such a sweet ride! The 2010 Quick 3 is nice too, butI do not see rack mounts in the picture I looked at (which is bizarre on a bike that is not designed strictly for racing). You could use p clamps to anchor the bottom of your rack and a monostay adapter at the top http://www.amazon.com/ACTION-CARRIER.../dp/B0019BCQCO If you go this route, clamp the p clamps to the metal, not the carbon to avoid the risk of damaging the carbon.

Or a seatpost mounted rack might serve your needs like this one but limited capacity (rated for 25lbs) http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...Rear+Rack.aspx

I would be tempted to cancel the order on the bike, but not without confirmation that it is not rack ready because I'm not certain about that.

If you aren't planning to carry a lot and you are willing to ride with a backpack, you might not need a rack at all, or just a small one like http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...m+Rack+Ex.aspx

Whew, though I messed up big time there. Thanks for the help. The LBS just called me back and confirmed the 2010 Quick 3 does have braze ons and is rack ready. Guess all the pics are from an early version according to what Cannondale told my LBS. Yea, I am kind of bummed about my bike. Had a hefty bike cable that was approx. 1/2 in dia. cable. Cut right thru it with some kind of cutters. The police said they now have hydraulic bolt cutters with carbide jaws. He said he had seen some cables with a loud alarm that went off as soon as the thing was disturbed at all. Said the cable was only about 1/8 inch thick. I guess you don't want to stick around with the noise is the theory there. In a way I'm glad it happened now, before I had all the accessories on it. Had insurance on it though. Glad I took the LBS advise and called my homeowners insurance company and took a rider on it. After making the claim I also learned you have to take a separate policy on the accessories if you want them insured as well. Will have 2 policies on the next one.

Had just parked it in front of ACE Hardware and locked it to a pole halfway between the entrance and exit doors. Store was pretty busy and was able to get a couple witness statements. One witness said they just simply pulled up next to it, hopped out and cut lock. Tossed bike in back of truck and left (10 - 15 seconds). She thought it was there bike, until she came out of the store and seen me standing there with my helmet in my hand. Store has no cameras outside. Just had a basic description of the two men and the truck. Doubt the police will recover it.

Was a little mad when I was told it would be until March before I could get another 2010 CX Ultra. Looked at the CX-1. They would not move on the price of that one. They had a Q4 on the floor and I took it for a test ride. Was surprised on how good it felt. Softer ride than I expected with the carbon fork. It does not have the carbon seat stay. The LBS did a little research for me and found the 2010 Quick 3 in Grey for 760 bucks. I figured what the heck and ordered. Have scanned the threads here and not found to much on the quick 3. Hope it is a decent machine.

Well, short of tying a Pit Bull to the bike. How do you keep your bike safe?

I use one of these. http://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-Evo...1958928&sr=1-4

The rats can probably chew through anything, but a good u-lock is better than a cable lock.
The mini shackle prevents the use of some leverage type lock breaking devices that can be used on the long shackle model.

It's a good thing your bike does have rack eyelets, but in case someone reading this thread doesn't and would like to use a rear rack you can use an Arkel Randonneur rack. I have one on my 7.5 FX and it works great, very stable. I just recently bought this rack and a Tailrider trunk bag and the combination works very well, it doesn't shift around or bounce at all.

That is a nice design. Using the saddle rails makes it look like it would be a lot stronger than other seatpost racks, but only rated to carry 13lbs. I guess you carry more with it unless you have super lightweight saddle/seatpost.

Another rack I forgot, the best ones I know of for bikes without rack mounts are made by Old Man Mountain and I was going to find a link for them after looking at the Arkel site, but I found them on the same website. http://www.arkel-od.com/us/coldsprings-rear.html

I don't know how Old Man Mountain and Arkel are related. I don't think Arkel makes OMM racks, but they sell them.

Tubus racks are very good too, so hopefully the Cannondale will have the rack mounts. Cannondale made panniers before they made bicycles and I think rack mounts are still pretty standard on most of their bikes.

The Arkel Randonneur rack looks cool and well designed. Wish they made a little bigger bag for that rack that would hold a 13 in laptop and also totally waterproof.

If you want to use panniers, you can't use that rack. You'll need a rack with side supports. I didn't google the Tubus model you ordered, but they make excellent racks. It's going to fit your bike, don't worry. If the bike comes without rack mounts and the salesman assured you that it would have them, refuse delivery. Or get an Old Man Mountain rack, or a backpack, or... You'll have options. There are solutions to every problem.

If you don't really need panniers, Ortlieb makes nice backpacks with that roll top design. I've never used an Ortlieb bag but they are popular with messengers. The roll top closure is similar to what I've seen on bags designed for kayakers. Bags that are made to stay dry even if you flip your boat, which is why I think it really is a very waterproof closure.

The Orlieb packpacks are kinda huge, but better too big than too small and you never know when you'll need to do some shopping on the way home from work. A little extra capacity never hurts.

Those Old Man Mountain racks look pretty sturdy. I think I'm going to try to keep most of the gear bike mounted in some form. I have a Camel Back that I wear when traveling by Motorcycle or Bicycle.

I will definitely refuse delivery if it does not have the rack mounts. This was one of the things I made the salesman aware of while we were discussing the best bike for my needs.

Thanks for all the help so far

I've never seen a Quick without rack mounts...I think you're going to be fine. That will be a nice bike too but I agree with another comment that you made about missing the disc brakes that are on the CX. The frame you're getting won't allow you to add discs in the future either but the Techno V-Brakes on my Q5 work well. I have Avid 7's on my Catrike recumbant and they are scary good.

For water proofness I am a big believer in Rubbermaid and shock cords...who cares what it looks like if it works. For larger loads than a bag on my rack I also have a Burley Nomad trailer and with that I can even take the kitchen sink along with me. I do use Rubbermaid boxes in that.
