Trek FX 7.x vs. Felt X:City D
I have been trolling Craigslist for too long now in search of a decent enough second commuter. I use my BD road bike now, but would like the rain/trail option.
I stopped by the LBS yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the 2009 Felt X:City D. Whatever I get was going to be converted immediately to a drop bar 1x8/9, so this looks like a great fit. The FX 7.1 is only a 7 speed, but I would slap a 9 speed cassette on there anyway.
The Felt weighs in at a hair over 25 lbs, which isn't bad. Trek does not list weights. I am used to riding ~20 lb bikes, but figure I'm not racing - as long as it is tight and solid I'll be happy. Both rigs are $399.
Any Felt owners? I know there FX owners out there. I would go for the Fuji Absolute Disc, but that's a little outside of my price range.

To be honest, if that Felt X City D was still made, I'd be all over it. The number of models that are a 1x_ stock are few and far between, at least in a frame geo that appeals to me.

The Felt X:City D is in the trunk - $390 out the door. Can't wait to get it home and rebuild it. Before and After pics tonight.
Plusses on this bike: Disc tabs on the frame, unconventional and more efficient top tube routing, rigid bladed fork, matte grey finish. It is essentially a road-worthy 29er.

Here is the 2009 Felt X:City D. So far I have removed the Albert mustache bars and installed my Scott AT-2 LF cowhorn bars, flipped the stem and added Candy-1 pedals. Not bad for $390 including tax at the LBS. I have everything needed to make this a drop bar conversion, except for the shorter stem. I don't want to go much shorter than 80mm (from 110mm), but I have previous experience in conversions stretching me way out on the frame. If anyone has a 80mm 26.0 clamp 7 degree or less stem lying around, I have lots of stuff to trade
This rig rolls so much faster than I anticipated for a 24 lb bike, but it could be the new bike placebo. It feels faster than my road bike, and will get all five days this week of the commute. Looking for ways to pimp it out without spending too much. Ideas welcome.

After the first commute this morning on the new rig, I am surprised at how well it climbs. I have done the 1 x whatever (42t) before on a MTB conversion, and it took a bit of learning on hills. The difference has to be in the 11-30 cassette vs. the 11-28 I used to run. I never thought two teeth could make such a difference. The wheels are stock and heavy, but spin well. Riding on flat bars spreads my wingspan a bit more than I am comfortable with. Not happy with the cabling job by the LBS, so I have decided to press on with the drop bar conversion. Tektro long pull aero levers, friction shifter and compact bars with grey/black striped tape.
