Bontrager Satellite Elite Carbon Trekking Handlebar???

So, does anyone have or had the Bontrager Satellite Elite Carbon Trekking Handlebars? It seems they've been around a long time, but nobody seems to have them. They seem almost impossible to find. What's the scoop? They look like they could be pretty nifty.

I'm surprised no one has these or knows about them. I got one off eBay last week and hope to install it this weekend. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

There's another one on eBay now from the same seller http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT He says it is a pull-off from a new bike. I didn't know any of the new Treks came with one, but I'm not up on every model. Anyway, it looks like a great idea and weighs almost half of the bar that came stock on my Mendota, plus I picked it up for $125, so why not?

IMG_1084 (Medium).JPGIMG_1083 (Medium).jpgHandlebar is mounted. The first thing to work around is that there is no normal handlebar diameter real estate to mount things to. By the time the grips, brakes, and shifters are installed, you're out of space. Fortunately my Princeton Tec light handles the larger, middle bar without a problem. iPhone mount, no problem. Bell and pepper spray had to be rigged with zip ties. The bell is around the very inside section of the grip which isn't a problem. I like the spray solution the least and we'll see where that goes. Should get a good ride in later today, although I may wait a week or so and get some time under my belt before I let you know how I like them.

Seems like a more useful hand position than most bar ends provide. I often use that portion of my straight bars to relieve my numbing hands. I think cost is a big reason you don't hear much about them. Who's going to drop $200 for handlebars on a $500 hybrid? I've also seen a lot of road bike weight weenies swear off carbon bars after destroying them in a minor crash.

31 miles on the first ride. These bars are definitely better than the stock 'capital bar' that comes on the Mendota. Maybe the bars or maybe the Ergon GP1 grips. Most likely both in conjunction. I'm a tall'ish guy so a little further reach to the grips is good for me. Grabbing the 'horns' is a good break on a longer ride, but it takes caution. It's easy to get the steering going back and forth as you change position. Probably just takes getting used to. I'm not sure yet, but I may want to tape the horns. I'll use them bare for a few weeks and then tape them and see which I prefer. I can always take the tape off if that's the better option.

Hey Gary - I saw that you have the Bontrager Carbon elite trekking bars. I am thinking about trying to find a used set to try out and wanted to know what your thoughts are about it.
    Thanks

Undoubtedly the best mod to the bike. I also have bar ends on them, but almost never use them. The 'horns' on the bar are very comfortable and a better changeup from the normal handlebar position. Get 'em if you can find them. You won't be sorry.

That's pretty much the same setup I have on mine with bar ends mounted between the grips and shifters. MUCH more useful than having bar ends way out on the ends of the bars, over 2 feet apart from each other.

Gary, any issues with the ergons? I know they say not compatible with carbon, but I assume that is mostly lawyer cya in case you over tighten and crack the bars. Or are there models of ergon that are 'compatible?'

I got a set of these http://www.amazon.com/Ergon-48100000...e_sg_ai_ps_t_1 They say currently out of stock, so don't know if they no longer make them or what the scoop is. As long as you don't torque it too tight, I'd suspect you'd be fine.

    Try here:

I'm sure other Trek dealers may carry them too. I like them also, but not at that price.

I was wondering if anyone knows how they measure in width compared to the stock FX bars? These trekking bars are 630mm, but I can't find a stock FX measurement listed anywhere.

I'm intrigued by these bars and I bet they will look and feel great on your 7.7 FX Fudgeurpizzy. I ride a 7.3 FX and have been considering replacing my factory bar (with bar end mods) with a trekking bar to gain more hand and body positions. I generally like to ride fairly upright but I would like the ability to have a more aero/stretch position and not interested in drop bars. It sounds like this particular trekking bar is not being manufactured anymore and is hard to find. I really do not need or want to pay for carbon. Does anyone know of something similar in aluminum?

lol way late reply to this one. I used to have the setup pictured below, though recently changed to an FSA Metropolis bar and am not currently using the bar ends.
