When I first started looking for a bike, I looked at the LL Bean bikes because LLB usually sells good quality merchandise. I found out their bikes, or at least some of them, are made by Schwinn, and was told Schwinns are now "Schwinn" in name only, no longer good quality. However, from reading this forum, I've learned there are also some bike-shop Schwinns that are good quality. Out of curiosity, are the LLB bikes the big-box store kind or the bike-shop quality? Although I was told they are big-box, their prices (unless on sale) are very close to low-end BS prices. They don't go into detail on the specs. One of my friends ordered one but the size wasn't right so she returned it. Just wondering....

I saw a couple that looked like rebadged Schwinns on their site. The bike you are looking at is on par quality wise with any other bike at that price point. Schwinn has some very high quality bikes in their line-up.

I'm an old fool but I trust names like L.L. Bean. They don't provide detailed specs but I'd guess it's speced comparably to similarly priced comfort bikes. Some of the bikes are described as "by Schwinn" but not the one you linked too. The "by Schwinn" is to trick old fools like me who remember when Schwinn was the only domestic provider of decent bikes and imports weren't widely available. Most of our generation haven't had time to ride bikes since Schwinn was king.

I thought your friend returned hers because of toeclip overlap.

@qms: You have an excellent memory! Yes, she did, but she also said it felt like there wasn't enough room for her knees. For the sake of simplicity, I just said the size wasn't right, which actually is what she thought the problem was. (She knows about as much about bikes as I do. LOL Well, I know a bit more now only because I'm a good reader.)

I chatted with an LLB bike person at the time I began looking at bikes who said it was made by Schwinn. I'm trying to get the bike bug to bite my friend again so we can ride together sometime, when I finally learn to *ride* (loosely speaking) my new bike. The Trek shop was so very nice to me that I was sort of trying to steer her that way, but I don't want to steer her wrong esp if the LLB bike is one of the "bike shop" type Schwinns. The LLB bike was kind of a pain for her and her hubby, because they had to pay extra shipping, reassemble the bike, then disassemble it, pack it up, and return it, although the return shipping was free. Also, the one in the link is offered only in sizes XS (which she ordered) and M, no S. One of the fit guidelines (height) shows a gap that should be "S", but then according to the inseam guide, there is no gap. ?? I can't recall which bike she ordered, but it was one of the comfort bikes they sell.
