HELP! Is this bike any good? Minelli Felipe 700C :)

    Hi there,

I'm from Montreal, Quebec and I'm looking for a performance hybrid to get some training on the bike. Honestly, I haven't owned a bike in 10 years... and I came across what looks like a good deal for a Canadian brand bike. $400 taxes in:

Are these specs any good for the price?
Other bikes I'm looking at: Giant Rapid 3 and Trek 7.3 FX

Minelli Felipe (more spec details in the link):
    http://www.minelli-bikes.com/B_Felipe_Eng.html

    Specs:
    Alloy 6061 Performance
    EZ-Fire 21 speeds
    Shimano Altus derailleurs
    Shimano BB cartridge
    Aluminum crank
    Alloy Promax V-brakes
    Double density grips
    Alex G-6000 rims
    Adjustable aluminum stem

    Thanks a million!
    J from MTL

The other bikes in the price range I'm looking at are the Trek 7.2 fx, Cannondale Quick 5, Fuji Absolute 3.0 and the Giant Rapid 3... They are all a bit more expensive than the Minelli, but I was told by the bike salesman that the Minelli is just as good as most of these.

Anyone have any advice on any of the above bikes?

The gearing between those bikes is somewhat different. Do you plan on riding hills or are you capable of pushing a bigger gear? The Minelli says 48-38-28 and Shimano HG-50 12-25T while the Treks and Fuji are 48-38-28 and 8 speed 11-32 and the Rapid 3 is 30/42/52 SRAM PG 830 11x28, 8-Speed. May not matter to you, but something to consider.

I'll likely be training close to home, and it's mostly flat bike paths here. I've really not had much explanation from the reps at my LBS, they've mainly just told me the bikes are good for starters.... but what are the main diferences between the gears for each?

    Thx for the input!

If you're mostly flat and/or in good shape the lowest gear doesn't really matter as you won't be using it. The lowest gear is the combination of the smallest front and the largest rear. 28x32 is lower than 28X25. See http://sheldonbrown.com/gearing/index.html for more than you probably want to know. I currently have a 30X28 as my lowest gear and I can't get up some of the hills around my house so I'm looking at a Trek 7.3 fx hoping that its 28X32 will get me up them. Of course I'm 64 and have emphysema so that is also a factor. Sounds like you don't need to be to concerned about gearing though.

Yes, there are no hills nearby here, so it may not be an issue. I'll definitely read up on the link . I've also seen excellent reviews for the Trek 7.3 Fx. I would definitely go for it, but it's slightly out of my price range.
    Thanks again for sharing!

Hi, I bought this same model of bike yesterday and it's my first bike as well. I was wondering what has been your appreciation so far of this model? Thanks

The bike is a starter entry level hybrid/road bike. That's about the standard price for a hybrid with them components from a local bike shop. Not sure, but is the value of Canadian dollar the same as American? I would rather look into a 8 speed.
