Uprights - Good for the neck, Bad for the Back?

I have got a bad neck and can't ride in the drop down position. I've also got a bad back.
I've been using an upright hybrid, and my next feels fine, but my back got achy. I read that an upright posture can aggravate a bad back, because the straight spine takes jars while riding. I got a seat post that's like a shock absorber and that helped quite a bit. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

i have a bad back too, and my back is fine on my upright hybrid. i don't buy that an upright position is worse for the back, the opposite is more widely accepted. I bet you would benefit from a professional fitting, and some core exercises...though honestly my core is pretty flimsy (read "flabby") and the upright position feels a lot better than down low on a roadie. just my .02

Thanks Monkeydentity. Glad to hear your upright is fine for your back. I think the angle of my seat may have been a contributing factor. Spent some time adjusting it, and now much improved for the back. :-)
