Question Trek 7.2fx. Is it possible to upgrade from 8 to 10speed?

<warning!>Real newbie question ahead...

Is it possible to upgrade my 8-speed Trek 7.2fx to a 9 or 10-speed cassette?

Thanks.

Yes, but you'll need a minimum of a new chain, cassette, crankset and rear shifter. You may need a new front and rear derailleur (some stuff is 8/9 speed compatible and some is 9 speed specific.) You will definitely need a front&rear derailleur for a 10 speed setup. If you go from a triple to a double then you can add front shifter to the list of possibly needing replacement which means replacing pretty much everything in the drivetrain.

So.... it might be cheaper to sell this bike and purchase a 10 speed. Why do you want to upgrade?

You can do anything as long as you have the income.

Is it possible, sure, as others have noted all the parts that need swapping, but what are you hoping to gain from the change?

If buying a new, it's a no brainer to go for the latest parts, but when upgrading, there are still plenty of 8 speed cassettes and chains out there, and the ratios are similar to what you get with 10 speed.

the biggest difference in 8 speed is that you'll have larger jumps between gears and likely less total gear, although sometimes you do see a 8spd hybrid with more than 28T on the largest cog.

if you want to go faster, I would look at buying a used road drivetrain as long as you're either sure that you can get flatbar shifters for it, or that you want to convert to drop bars.

a 2x10 road drivetrain will be light and fast. used sram apex shouldn't cost all that much.

OP, this post would be extreme worst case. For 8 speed to 9 speed, you should only need chain, cassette and rear shifter. No derailleur change front or back is needed, and the crank would be fine. IMHO, 9 speed is a nice sweet spot, and 10 adds cost and complexity with limited benefit, and with a loss of durability (much more wear susceptible chain).
