Replacing my stolen hybrid
I've just joined this forum today.
Last week I had my beloved Devinci Helsinki full-carbon hybrid stolen after nearly two years of daily commuting. Lock was broken while bike was in my condo's parking garage. My insurance is heping to cover the loss so I've been researching a replacement.
Since I have been thinking of modding the Helsinki to internal gearing plus a belt drive, I researched a ton of other brands with that kind of setup. For those interested, check out the Gates Belt Drive website fo lists of partner bike manufacturers to see what's out there.
My local shops had the Trek Soho ($1.2k) but I didn't like the coaster braking on the rear and the overall look didn't appeal. The Scott SUB 10 2012 ($1.3K) looked about what I wanted but could not find one in any shop within hundreds of miles...all local shops wanted non-refundable 25% deposits to special order me one.
Kept looking and saw a neat Specialized model but very high priced ~$3k. BMC had a nice one closer to $2K...again none readily available for test rides/checkout.
Then I stumbled on the Spot Brand bikes...the ACME & AJAX caught my eye as cool looking setups...the fact the bikes are designed around the Gates belt & IGH were a big plus. Price range is about what I can live with. My local shop is a Spot dealer...but no inventory for another few months. Even Spot themselves were out until the next frames came in from China in two months.
Then I found an on-line US retailer (RealCyclist) still had stock and decided to go for it. An ACME is on order. I will bring it to my local shop for setup and accessorizing so that I keep in his good books...
Can't wait for it to arrive...not riding daily is getting to be a drag...
Mike.

I basically went through the same thing. Started at the district/soho then went to the SUB 10 and then found the BMC and specialized. Then I found the Spot bike and they are by far the best IGH gates setups in stock form. The two companies are hand in foot and both work together.
I really want an Acme but decided to take it slow and build my own starting from a Trek Sawyer frame. I originally wanted to make this a long DIY project. Was close to getting the SUB 10 but no dealers were responding in my area. You would think they want to actually sell some bikes.
