2012 Jamis Coda Sport vs Comp
 

Hi all,

I went down to my LBS last weekend after reading a few of the posts on here and test rode / ordered a new 2012 Jamis Coda Sport in black. Unfortunately, they didn't have my exact size so they had to place an order for it. Today, I received a call saying that the bike is backordered and could be a month or so before they get it in. :(

My question is - how much nicer are the components on the Coda Comp (which they do have in stock) for the extra $215 it costs. I know the Comp has a carbon fork but what about the other parts? I really like the blue of the Comp vs the black of the Sport but color shouldn't influence me :)

Looking at the specs on the Jamis site, there isn't too much difference between them, the main things are the fork, saddle and the change from 24 to 27 speed.

For the saddle, that is a very personal thing, many people will change from new to their prefered one.

For the forks, yes carbon are nice, but that's a big price jump for them.

For the 24-27 speed, the Sport has an Acera mix, where as the Comp has a Alivo / Acera mix with a Deore RD. With the trickle down in design / technology, Acera is looking pretty good today compared to 5-10 years ago.

Other than the hubs Shimano vs Formula, all the other parts look to be the same, seems like a big price jump for not too much more in spec; however you have mentioned the color of the bike, and if you like the blue better than the black, you will probably enjoy owning it more. Would see be bike shop can give you a better deal on the Comp as they can't get the cheaper one in for a month or so.

Just FYI, Jamis JUST added a new color 12 Coda Comp bc of negative feedback / opinion on the blue. It's not on the website yet but my LBS had one in stock.... It's Graphite w Silver and yes, def comp not elite

The Comp has much better components etc, but then $215 extra is a bit much. If it was me. I would rather get the Comp and probably spend the extra money for it or look around some more, but that's just me. I wouldn't get anything lower than Alivio for mountain bike components. I ordered a 2012 black coda sport too btw ( about 3 wk wait ).... Debated on the new graphite color on coda comp but $699 was more than I think I want to pay.

DXR is a BMX groupset
LX hasn't been a MTB groupset for getting on for a decade now, SLX replaced that
Saint and Hone are freeride / DH groupsets, they are of equivalent levels to XT and SLX, but not above in the hierarchy

Nothing wrong with the current Acera, this has a lot of the design that XT/SLX had a few years ago, and is fitted on bikes which a few years ago would have got Deore.

Just saying, if it was me. I would look higher. Better components makes a big difference in the ride quality. Even though some lower end components will do, but why settle for less? It bothers me to have low end components that doesn't shift etc well and is not as smooth and quiet. Purchasing a bike isn't cheap, so do it right the first time and you'll have no regrets.

Any other input or final opinion on this?

Do you plan on riding this bike many miles for many years or just once a month? Better components will perform better and last longer. I think the carbon fork, the much better rear derailleur, better front derailleur and 9 speed are well worth the additional cost. Try not to be impatient and buy a bike because it's in stock. Try not to focus on color :-/
