Similar to Giant Rapid 3

I had a Giant Rapid 3 a year ago and was very happy with its performance. Unfortunately, it was stolen and I'm looking to replace it with a similar bike. I am considering the Mercier Galaxy Tour (https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...alaxy_tour.htm). Can anyone let me know how this compares to the Giant or give me another recommendation? Thanks.

Not too familiar with Mercer as a brand, but that bike seems decent.
I have a 2011 Giant Rapid 3 and love it. I was also checking out the Trek FX series and Specialized Sirrus. The Trek is a great bike but slightly less sporty than the Rapid. Very smooth shifting, comfortable and solid, but not as fast. The Specialized was decent, but I felt it had lower end componentry (which is reflected in the price). Those are the only other hybrids I'm really familiar with. Most bikes will be pretty similar in the $500 +/- price range, and most people will probably tell you to just buy the brand carried by the local bike shop.

The Mercier has a carbon forks. which is better than the Giant, but unsure about the hubs, rims, crank set etc. I was looking into this bike also, when I was looking for a bike for my wife. End up getting the Motobecane Cafe Latte instead. A little bit better on the components, but with no carbon forks. Plus it was $50 more.

Thanks. Any comments on your experience with bikesdirect? I have heard from some people that the brands sold there are just shells that have been taken over by Chinese companies that slap a bunch of decent components together which can make assembly difficult. Is there any truth to this or are these brands just as good as the name brands that are assembled at bike shops?

Got two bikes from them. 2010 Fuji Absolute and 2012 Motobecane Cafe Latte. The bikes has been great. No complaints. I did however got a creaking stem, but they sent me another one and problem solve with no charge.

I've also purchased a bike from Bikes Direct, and found the bike to be a great deal for the money. It is true that some of the brands they sell, such as Motobecane, are not made by the same company as vintage bikes by the same name. My bike was easy to assemble, and has been problem free. I've only put 1,200 commuting miles on the bike since I bought it in February, but I've been very pleased with my Bikes Direct purchase.

I'd recommend the bike I have (Giant FCR3500), but unfortunately it's a China-only model. It's got great performance and the components are pretty decent for the price I paid for it.
