I can highly recommend either a Jamis Allegro (Sport or Comp) or a Jamis Coda (Sport or Comp), those would be within your price range or close to. The Allegro is Alum. frame, sport has cro-mo fork and Comp has carbon fiber fork, the Coda has a Cro-Mo Steel frame, same forks on each version. I own both in the "Sport" model and REALLY like them! The BEST thing is to go do several shops and try several BRANDS and find the ONE that makes you SMILE the most, jmho, ymmv.

Go to a local bike shop and test ride several bikes and ask any question you can think of. Buy the bike you like the best.
Coincidentally, and this shouldn't have any bearing on your decision, I also ride a Jamis (2010 Coda). Didn't even come up in my top 5 when I was doing 'research' but it rode the best so...
