    Boardman Hybrid and Avid BB5 brake mismatch?

    hi,
    Has anyone got a 2010 Boardman Hybrid Comp? If so please can you tell me what colour are your brake calipers?
    The reason I'm asking is that my Boardman Hybrid Comp has Avid Mountain Bike levers for flat bars and silver BB5 brake calipers which I believe are the road version.
    Looking at the rest of the Boardman range from 2010 to date, all the other bikes either match Avid Mountain Bike levers with black BB5 brake calipers (the mountain bike version) or they have the silver BB5 calipers matched to road levers such as on the CX bikes.
    As the road and mountain brake versions use different amounts of cable pull, SRAM and Avid do not recommend mixing the two types.
    Halfords stance is that it must be ok. Am I missing something?

    only place brake pull matters AFAIK, is long pull V brakes (and many mechanical disks) vs everything else. small differences in leverage are -meh-, squeeze a little harder, or lighter, as the case may be. putting long pull brakes on a short pull lever, you won't get enough out of the brakes before bottoming out the levers, and putting short pull brakes on long pull handles will require too much hand strength to get adequate braking force. I've never seen any issues mixing 'road' dual pivot caliber brakes and short pull mountain brakes such as cantilevers or old fashion side pulls.

    Are the levers marked as being MTB? What about the calipers? Avid def marks it's calipers with either Road or MTN. Also,Avid used to make silver MTB calipers(two of my current fleet have them).

    Do the brakes work properly? If so,you have the proper calipers. If you have long pull levers with short pull brakes,they won't work. You'll slow,but you won't stop. If you have short pull levers with long pull brakes,they'll work ok,but you will be pulling the lever to the bar.

    Brakes are either long(MTB) pull or short(road) pull. Almost all caliper brakes,including old side-pulls and center-pulls,are short. Cantilevers are also short. V*/linear-pull brakes are usually long,but there are short pull ones. Discs were traditionally long pull,but with discs gaining in popularity on cross bikes,every big name manufacturer makes them in both styles.


    (*V brake is Shimano's name for linear-pull,but most linear pulls are referred to as V's,just like most inline skates are called Rollerblades and most facial tissue is called Kleenex)

    Many thanks for the replies and info. I didn't know that Avid used to make silver mtb calipers. I bought two Boardman Hybrids at the time, the other was an FI for my wife and that has got black calipers.
    The brakes seem to work ok. They are nowhere near as powerful as BB7's although this is to be expected to some extent. They don't have that really wooden feel that you get when you use V brake levers with canti brakes.
    I've seen some silver Avid calipers with the word "Road" written on them but these don't have that. I've recently bought a silver caliper that was sold to me as the Road version (but it was eBay so who knows) and it is identical to the silver ones on the Boardman including the caliper arm length.
    Stupidly, I didn't measure the length of the caliper arms on the FI bike as I beleived the rule was black=mtb and silver=road (perhaps the eBay seller thought the same).

    to improve rim brakes, buff them up a bit with a little medium sand paper, and adjust them for proper toe-in (trailing edge of the brake shoe should be about 1mm wider than the leading edge, and make sure they are square with the rims on a vertical axis). clean the rim with a coarse rag and some rubbing alcohol to remove old rubber and grease.

    On closer examination, both silver calipers have a small letter "R" printed on the actuator arm. I guess this indicates that they are the road version. The levers are certainly the mtb model.
    I guess I'm back to my original question which is what colour are the calipers on your Boardman Hybrid? Is mine the only one with this mismatch or is it somehow intentional?

    Ok,first off,DO YOUR BRAKES WORK? If they work,that is to say if you can come to a complete stop from speed in a reasonable distance without the lever being mashed into the bar,then you're golden. Don't sweat it.

    Second,have you had this checked by a proper bike shop(frack Helfords)? This is really something that needs eyes put on it by a mechanic IRL.

    Third,how do you know the levers are MTB? Are they marked? Avid's site only shows MTB levers,but it's not unusual for manufacturers to have product lines they only sell to bike companies and don't list. Also,some levers are adjustable. Had a bike at my clinic this summer with Shimano levers that were set to the wrong pull.

    I can't see a bike company putting out bikes with the wrong levers and not doing a recall or maintenance bulletin.

    indeed, quite a few brake levers are dual mode. I've used the cheap tektro duals on a bike that had a sturmey archer drum brake in back, and a diacompe sidepull caliber in front, solved a 20 year old problem of not being able to get decent braking on that back wheel, hah! (the drum was much happier with long pull, while the front caliber needed short pull). then the sturmey-archer axle bent, and I went and silver-brazed vbrakes onto that frame so I could run a regular mountain bike wheel, hah!

    the dual mode brake levers will have two attachment points for the thing that holds the slug on the end of the cable, about 1/4" apart. the notch closer to the pivot is for short pull conventional brakes, and the one farther out is for long pull linear/v-brakes.

    The brakes do work but take a lot of effort to stop when going downhill (I weigh about 200lbs). I am assuming that the levers are mountain bike levers as they are identical in appearance, dimensions, pivot locations etc to the Avid FR5's that I have on another bike. There isn't too much movement of the lever as this is what you would expect with road levers and mtb calipers whereas I have mtb levers and road calipers.

    Incidentally, I do have a bike on which I use a pair of the Shimano dual position levers. The bike has a mechanical disk on the front and I use the long cable pull position for that and the short cable pull position for the Nexus roller brake on the back.

    Interesting. On my flat bar roadie I switched out the turkey wing equipped drops and stem mounted friction shifters to flat bars and Shimano indexed pods with brake levers. They are for v brakes and I'm running single pivot calipers on the front and dual on the back. Interestingly the single pivots feel and work fine with the long pull levers. I think its something to do with the fact that they are cheap and the springs hold them way out. The rear dual pivot I installed actually does work.. it feels a bit wooden but you can lock the rear wheel without too much difficulty. Not as nice a feel as the v brakes on one of my other bikes but almost as good. It did take a bit of tweaking with the cable length and shimano 105 pads to get it to work though.

    Don't. Go to a shop and have them checked out. Also have the brakes looked at to make sure they're set up properly. I've purchased four brand new bikes that I needed to fix the disc brakes on because they weren't set up properly from the LBS.
