to kickstand or not?

Since the 60's I've always been told and though that putting a kickstand on a bike was a "faux pas". Early on I used a flick stand (anybody remember those). For the past 30 years I just haven't used anything on either my road (now hybrid) or mtn bikes. However, I'm beginning to rethink the issue. My wife and I just purchased replacement hybrids and am concerned about the typical scratches and paint chips we have accumulated over the past years. Living in FL, I see more and more better bikes with stands on the trails. So I'm just wondering how many of you have stands and what might be the best kind to purchase.

Thanks

I use the stand that came on my Cannondale Quick 4. I know a lot of people don't like them but I find it extremely practical. It makes stopping for breaks a lot easier without looking around for something to prop it up against. Also helps when I add air to my tires. I really can't say it gets in the way and its not as if I'm that worried about weight.

Grillparzer 01-06-13 06:28 PM

If paring down every little ounce is a concern then don't use one, but otherwise I think they're useful.

I've used a flickstand as well--wasn't entirely satisfactory. I'll be putting a Greenfield kickstand on my hybrid mainly to make it easier to attach and load panniers. It's the best way I can think of to avoid some of the discriminating scars and marks you speak of.

I'm thinking of getting one of those double kick stands that support the bike with it straight up rather than leaned over, like a center stand on a motorcycle

bjjoondo 01-06-13 07:31 PM

I had the double legged kickstand and it was good but I got tired of "lifting" the bike so I went to a chainstay kickstand on my utility hybrid so I can "easily" hook up my trailer. Now on my trekking/weekend bike, I've decided NOT to have a kickstand at all or I'll save up and get a "Clickstand", http://www.click-stand.com/ to use to load up panniners, when I get a chance to do some weekend touring next spring.

cute. I think I have some old tent poles, hmmmm :)

teicher 01-06-13 07:51 PM

I've been using one for over four years. Love it. I would sorely miss if it it were gone, it's one of the most useful things to have around. Makes stopping for a break or a quick repair so much easier, and it is especially good if have young kids and need to mess around with their bikes or seats attached to your bike.

My frame has a kickstand plate and I have a Park brand kickstand. It's very durable, with a rubber foot pad, and it has never let me down.

Since grocery shopping and errand running is my most frequent bicycular activity (forgive my noun-abuse!), going without a kickstand is a non-issue. I am seriously thinking about the above-mentioned chainstay kickstand, since loaded panniers and a sudden turn in the front tire can spell tip-over disaster. I'd be too afraid that a click-stand would "walk off", if I used it in a public area.

MadCityCyclist 01-06-13 08:35 PM

Unless you are racing in the velodrome, get over yourself and buy a kickstand.

pierce 01-06-13 08:50 PM

well,.. if your frame has carbon fiber chain stays, DO NOT GET A KICK STAND. /way/ too easy to crush carbon, and once its cracked, its greatly weakened.

if your frame has aluminum chain stays, and it doesn't have the bolt plate for a kickstand, BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN THE CLAMP.

my globe vienna CAME with a kick stand from the factory, and the bolt plate is welded to the frame.

I know I get very irritated when I have my bike parked in a rack and somebody else's bike gets entangled in mine because theirs did a "flop" because of no kick stand.

I have a double leg Pletcher(sp?) on a bike that I use for grocery shopping. It has the large rear Wald baskets, and when I am loading the baskets, the stand really shines. It's not any harder to use than any traditional kickstand. You will have to cut one leg to set it up properly, but that isn't hard to do.

I plan on putting one an a MTB to Hybrid conversion I'm putting together. From my experience with the grocery baskets, I think the Pletcher(sp?) will be invaluable when using my rear panniers.

I ride slow enough that I'm not worried about a few more ounces. Especially on a loaded grocery getter or on an overnight tour on my Hybrid. YMMV. :thumb:

I don't have a kickstand on my hybrids, but not for weight reasons - I just haven't found them necessary to have. There's always a wall, a fence, a tree, or a signpost around to lean my bike on when I need one, so I just don't see the need for kickstands.

Would be really hard to take pictures like this without a kickstand :)

or my old cruiser,

I used to sneer at kickstands and would have never put one on my bikes when I was younger. found them really handy on my 'fest bike' that I bring to a 5 day camp-out music festival twice a year, and before I knew it, I was putting them on all our bikes (except my old roadie, which I don't ride anymore anyways).

fwiw, the red one above was my old festival bike, and the blue one is my new hybrid which doubles as my current fest special...

I can just see it now. A Jerry Springer show with someone saying: "*****! I have a kickstand, bell, fenders, backrack and panniers! What do you think about that huh? And yeah, lights at night! Take that!" Actually, my lights are usually in my panniers.

Dunbar 01-07-13 01:11 PM

Yes on my hybrid. Hell no on my carbon road bike. I just hope the kickstand never comes down after I hit a big bump. That would not end well.

Thanks for the input. I thought the Click-Stand looked pretty good. It is a way to get the job done without putting anything on the bike. Also, I could use on my Mtn Bike as well. However, after a little surfing I decided on the Upstand and just purchased two. Will let you guys know how it works out... that is if the LBS ever gets delivery of our new Giant Escape RX0's.

Humm, that upstand, looks pretty clever, maybe have to look into it. One cool item on the clickstand is the, "parking brake", it's a strech cord that you loop over the brake lever and handelbar. I bought the, "parking brake" to use with my current "chain stay kickstand", it keeps it from going forward if your front wheel is on a "slight downhill", FYI. :)

I have had bikes with and without kick stands, and to me it's makes little difference. The bikes that had them came with them, and the bikes that didn't have kickstands didn't come with them.

If I have a bike that has one I use it, and if I don't, I lean it on something or lay it down in the grass.

fietsbob 01-08-13 03:35 AM

If every stop you lock your bike up, its less of an issue.

DocsDad 01-08-13 09:52 AM

Didn't have one on my MTB for obvious reasons. Looking forward to having a kickstand on my 7.2.

Yo Spiff 01-08-13 10:47 AM

I have one on my utility bike and it is very useful. I use this bike for photography outings and it's good to be able to get off the bike and have it stay upright on its own. Also good for some large group rides where If I am not among the first to the destination, all the spots to lean a bike get taken quickly.

I wouldn't put one on my fast road bike, however.

DowneasTTer 01-12-13 07:21 AM

Well the UpStands are in and on the new bikes. Today will be test but they good pretty good so far. I put the tabs on both the hybrids and the mtn bikes. Each UpStand comes with two tabs which is a great deal. Light, easy to pack, no real additional parts on the bike, made of carbon fibre so and the best part..... made in the good old USA. Here are a couple of shots in the drive.

When I was a kid in the 70’s you were considered a goof or a nerd if you used a kickstand. When we got new BMX bikes the first thing we do is take off the kickstand and all reflectors ( reflectors were nerdy too ). Now, as an adult I require a kickstand and reflectors and lights. It’s nice to mature. :)
