advice asap pls: Giant Escape 3 or Schwinn Voyageur 21?

I am 50, and just had hip surgery. I used to ride, but am a big fragile and anxious about it right now. I'm looking to buy a bike mostly for bike paths/road use. I looked at the Giant Escape 3 and the Schwinn Voyageur 21, which are both around $400. I didn't want to spend much more. Any thoughts on which is better? Any other recommendations? Thx.

Haven't looked at the specs of the Schwinn yet, but I am familiar with the reputation of the Giant...and that is a good one.

    + 1

My wife and I just purchased a couple of Escapes and love them. I think for the buck Giants can't be beat for the price point. We were looking at a Canondale model that was close to the Escape model we ended up purchasing. The specs on both bikes were very similar however the price was $225 less. For the two of us that was was savings of about $500 when you figure in taxes and the like. That said buying a bike is only part of the deal, you are buying into a LBS as well. They are as important as the bike itself.

Good luck and enjoy getting back to cycling.
