so im going to look at this tonight. i was wondering if its fair i offer him 300 if its in good shape. from the ad it seems like its taken care of. Thanks guys. also is there anything else i should be browsing the used market for?

I don't know much about the Sirrus but based on the Altus derailleur I'm guessing its the base model which goes for $520 MSRP new according to their website. It looks like its been very well taken care of. That cassette and "dork disk" are spotless! Looks like it has some sort of cycling computer mounted on it as well. Check and see if it will coming with that, what brand it is and how much it retails for when considering an offer too. I think the $400 for the bike alone is a little high considering the original price of the bike. Try for 300, the worst they can say is "no".

Ask to see the receipt for the bike.

yea im showing up with 300 cash. no more than that. i think thats still a good deal on something that retailed for a little over 500. no?

I have a 2012 base Sirrus, and it is a really good bike for what I use it for - I bought it for $487 (including tax). Depending on the year, you may have trouble fitting the rear fender (nothing that cannot be fixed with a little improvisation). If you can get it for $300, you have, IMO, a really good deal.

anything i should look for specifically? something that tends to wear?

You might want to find out year. Prior to 2012, all models came with a carbon fork. In 2012, they dropped the MSRP and eliminated the carbon fork from the base two levels.

is the frame size appropriate for you? while you can jack the seat way up on a short frame, the bars will be too close. I like to stretch out a bit on a bike frame

although I've changed some parts around on it already.

mine is a "L" large frame, I'm 6' tall but with relatively short legs and long torso. I prefer a forward riding position, so I've lowered my bars and used a longer stem, also a short flat bar instead of the original semi-riser.


edit: actually, that ad looks like an "XL" frame, from the head tube size. the bars are quite high relative to the seat. I'd suggest that is only suitable for someone with 34" or larger stepover height.

ah, ok. interesting, then, they've changed the frame geometry. see how on mine, the downtube and top tube almost touch at the head tube? while the sirrus in the ad, there's a good 3-4" or so of head tube between them. this raises the bars higher up, which is fine if you like the 'sit up and beg' riding position, I know many people do.

Does the seller not know the year of the bike? Would that indicate that maybe they don't actually own it? If there was an easy way to check for a carbon fork I would tell you, but I can't think of one.

that /looks/ like the fork on mine which is steel. a magnet would test for a steel fork, but telling aluminum from carbon might be harder.

that says the fork is aluminum. now i need to doubel check my Globe (also a 2010).... hmm, Mr Magnet says, I have a steel fork.

I did some digging, and I was wrong in saying all pre-2012's were carbon. Like pierce says, there are steel forks, aluminum forks, and carbon in the mix. If it is a 7 speed cassette, it will be steel or aluminum (magnet check), most of the 8 speed and up looked like carbon, but that was a quick check.

I looked at the archive Spec pages to see if I could find a color match to model, and I didn't, but it was a quick look. Sorry if I am less than helpful. Wasn't the intent.

I owned a 2010 (I originally thought '11, but I am more thinking '10) Sirrus Sport, great bike, msrp of $660 that I sold for $350, so you are in a reasonable price park regardless.

the 2010 base Sirrus, and my (very similar) Globe Vienna 3 are both 8 speed. I've already replaced the silly 11-32 gearing with a 13-26 cassette, much better gear spacing.

whats it worth to you as a nice riding like new hybrid ? thats really the only deciding factor. If its as new as it looks, and it fits you well, I'd be perfectly happy offering $300 for it.

I scored my 2010 Globe last summer off ebay, it was a store demonstrator, was totally new, and I got it obscenely cheap as noone else bid on it (I use a bid sniper that places my best bid in the last 5 seconds, this prevents stupid bidding wars where people keep raising their ceiling).... It ended up being like $200 + 75 shipping, pretty hard to beat.

he didnt want to take $300 because someone else was coming this weekend with 380 but i told him it was all i have. He had barely rode it and was moving so he needed the cash.

It even came with cleat pedals that he had. The only issue is that the display for the computer is missing so its just the sensor and the eye.

when I do the 'pull out $300 cash' for a deal (I try and do that with crisp $100s), I usually have another $40 or so in small bills salted in my wallet thats my 'lunch money' I'll use to sweeten the pot, some guys just feel they have to get SOME pullback from a lowball offer before they'll let it go. "Guess I'm eating peanut butter sandwiches the rest of the week :(" hah hah ha.

yea the guy worked for the local university and the head of the dept gave him the bike in exchange for labor so it was cash money for him. We got along really well and talked about everything from real estate to family. I stayed and spoke with him for over an hour before i left. I knew after a while he was going to say yes.

does anyone know if i can just use any computer or does it have to match the sensor on the bike?

it probably has to be the same brand and generation to fit in the bracket that connects to the sensor. like I know the catseye I had on my old bike won't fit on the Specialized bracket on my new one.
