Armadillos VS Gator Hardshell
I just switched from 700 x 25 Armadillo's to 700 x 23 Gator Hardshell's. On my SPECIALIZED
SIRRUS LTD, not only are they lighter, but ride a lot smoother. I hope they are just as good at stopping flats ..

It depends on your local roads but I found the Gatorskins and Gator Hardshells to be plenty flat resistant. I haven't tried the Armadillos but replaced the Gators with Durano Plus's which were no more flat resistant IME.

Armadillo isn't actually a specific tire type, its Specialized's brand name for the extra level of puncture resistance, and can be found on a wide range of their tires from mountain to road.
gators are way nicer road tires. armadillos ride like bricks.

+ 1 on they ride like bricks, I could feel every bump in the road. And there heavy also.

i switched my hybrid's tires from Nimbus Armadillos to Vittoria Randonneur Hyper, and wow, what a difference in ride quality, and rolling resistance. high thread count sidewalls for the win!

I haven't had a single tire-related incident since switching to the Gator Hardshells 2 years ago. Not one. Don't know about the Armadillos.

From my experience - Armadillo tires that supposed to be flat resistance, were the worst tires I have ever owned. Thanks to them I learned how to fix a flat... I was getting flat at least once a week. I started taking 2 spare tubes for each ride, then I just bought bunch of flat repair kits from Park tool to save weight and room in my bag. I switched to Vittoria Zaffiro and later on to Vittoria Rubino which have very little rubber comparing to any Armadillos. It was couple years ago, and I forgot how flat tire looks... Did I mention Vittoria was half the price?

again, armadillo is not a tire model, its a brandname for Specialized's flat resistance. they make everything from fat tire mountain bike knobbies with armadillo to hybrid tires like Nimbus with armadillo to road bike skinnies with armadillo. pretty much every one I've ridden of those have had a ride like a solid wood tire, awful. I've *heard* there's one model of high thread count skinny 700c road touring tire that has a decent ride, but its stupid expensive.
Vittoria are my go-to tires now too, I like the Hyper Randonneur's or whatever they are called now for hybrid sizes. Rubinos etc are more of a racing/training tire.
